The Great Mosque of Xining or Dongguan Mosque is the largest and most important mosque in the Qinghai Province designed combining both Chinese traditional architectural art and Islamic architectural features. Built in 1381 during the Ming Dynasty under Emperor Hongwu (1368-98) and with a history of more than 600 years old, it has served as an important religious education centre and as the highest learning institution of Islam. The mosque has undergone renovation in 1914 and was enlarged in 1946.
