For Omani lensman Haitham al Farsi, it was a proud moment when his photograph was featured as ‘Photo of the Day’ in the National Geographic online magazine on Monday. The photograph, titled ‘Explosive Celebration’, was taken by Haitham in Dima W’attayeen, Governorate of North Al Sharqiyah, during a traditional celebration where an aged man fires his rifle in the air. “I love to see a local picture going global. It is a matter of pride for me that the photo featured by one of the most famous photographic institutions in the world is mine,” said Haitham.
He said he was an amateur photographer, for whom it all began as a hobby, but later developed into a passion. Haitham got his first digital camera five years ago. “I was influenced by my father who was also into photography. I am passionate about arts, including music and visual arts.” Haitham is fond of “shooting” people’s lives, traditions and legacy. He has a knack of clicking unique pictures which has opened the doors for him to participate in both local and international exhibitions. “What makes my works different are they are spontaneous. I ensure I take the shoot when people are deeply absorbed in their normal practices,” he said.
