Muscat: Bahwan Healthcare Centre (BHC) and National Heart Center (NHC) of the Royal Hospital announced that it is the first hospital in Oman to implant the world’s smallest pacemaker, Micra Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS).

Dr Najib al Rawahi and Dr Ismail al Abri, Cardiac Electrophysiologists, NHC successfully implanted these devices on two patients. The device is a patented product by Medtronic, one of the world’s renowned bio-medical engineering product companies represented in Oman by Bahwan Healthcare Centre LLC.

The miniaturized Micra® transcatheter pacing system (TPS) is the world’s smallest pacemaker, delivered via a minimally invasive approach, directly into the right ventricle and does not require the use of wires known as “leads”.

Dr. Najib Al Rawahi said, “With the successful implantation of the first leadless pacemaker – the first in Oman – at the National Heart Center of the Royal Hospital, we have achieved a major milestone in the use of nanotechnology in medical field in our beloved country, Oman. The most important thing is the patient satisfaction and avoiding complications related to the pacemaker leads. Allah gives us the courage to serve the country and the people under the guidance of His Majesty the Sultan to introduce such advancements in Oman’s medical field”.

. Moustapha Youssef, Cardio Vascular Group Lead from Medtronic said, “At less than one-tenth the size of traditional pacemakers and comparable in size to a large vitamin capsule, the Micra TPS is the most advanced pacing technology available while being cosmetically invisible and small enough to be delivered with minimally invasive techniques through a catheter, and implanted directly into the heart. Once positioned, the Micra TPS is attached to the heart wall and can be repositioned or retrieved, if needed. Medtronic is glad to bring this latest technological advancement to Oman through Bahwan Healthcare Centre, our business partners in Oman.”

Sanjay Suri, General Manager from Bahwan Healthcare Centre, said, “Despite its miniaturized size, the Micra TPS has an estimated 10-year battery life. The device responds to patients’ activity levels by automatically adjusting therapy; it is approved for full-body MRI scans to provide patients with access to the most advanced imaging diagnostic procedures. As a pioneering healthcare company in Oman with over 40 years providing healthcare services to the people of Oman, Bahwan Healthcare Centre is very proud to have brought this new technology to Oman for the benefit of its people”.
