ABU DHABI, JAN 12 - Oman need a win against favourites Japan to stay afloat in the Asian Cup 2019 at the Zayed Sports City (ZSC) Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. Oman head coach Pim Verbeek said they are looking for full three points against a strong Japanese team.
“We are determined to play our best to make the most of it against Japan, one of the favourites to win the tournament,” the Dutchman told a pre-match press conference at the ZSC Stadium on Saturday.
The match will kick off at 5.30 pm (Oman Time).
The Red Warriors are without a point after their opening 2-1 loss against Uzbekistan in Group F.
“We had played very well against Uzbekistan but luck was not on our side,” Verbeek said.
The Oman coach said the performance of Oman in the opening game gave lot of belief to the players on their strengths.
“This match (Japan) our players have lot of confidence to perform our best football.”
“I think Japan also will be looking for a victory against us. We also plan the same.”
The Dutchman said the Japanese style of play is suitable for Oman.
“The Japanese style of combination football really suits us. We are game for it.”
On a query, Verbeek said the match against Uzbekistan had showcased Oman’s bench strength.
“Our substitute players had impressed during the game. This gives a lot of confidence to me as a coach on our selection.”
Oman’s lone goal in the match was also scored by Muhsin al Ghassani who replaced regular striker Khalid al Hajri, who failed to make much impact in the match.
Replying to a question whether any changes are planned in team line-up for Japan match, Verbeek said he has many options after the good show by the substitutes.
“We will decide about the team tactics and line-up after the final training session today,” he said.
Defender Mohammed al Musallami said they will bring their best game against Japan on Sunday.
“We know Japan are big side. But we have no fear and we are upbeat after a very good game against Uzbekistan,” Al Musallami said.
“We want to take the three points from the match and our players are capable of that,” he added.

JAPAN EYE LAST 16

Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu meanwhile has called upon his players to produce the performance of their comeback win against Turkmenistan.

After trailing 1-0 in the first half, Japan came back well in the second to post a 3-2 win in their first game.

“We faced some difficulties against Turkmenistan. Again, Oman is also a tough side and we are prepared for it,” the Japanese coach said.

“We would like to dominate our opponents. But our players should be able to change their tactics if it is a difficult match.”

Moriyasu said he would like to seal a place in the last 16 with a win against Oman.

“We want to enter the last 16 with a win on Sunday. But we must be patient, no need to put ourselves under pressure,” he said.

“I hope the players will express our desire on the pitch on Sunday,” Moriyasu added.
