Relaunched Oman skating body set for busy year

MUSCAT, Jan 29 - Oman Skating Sports Committee (OSSC) is one of latest relaunched committees by the Ministry of Sports Affairs. The latest committee is an umbrella of all the sports related to skating including ice hockey, free style skating which comprise of roller skating and other related sports. OSSC aims to boost skating sports in the Sultanate among the youth and encouraging all to know more about types of skating sports and to take part in different tournaments.
Said Ali al Zaabi, Chairman of OSSC, affirmed that committee has a lot to do in this year with a busy schedule and wider objectives to achieve for the sport in the Sultanate.
“The committee board members approved the agenda for 2019 which will include participation of Oman national team in many regional and international tournaments. Also, OSSC will host representatives of Asian Ice Hockey Federation in Muscat, holding some workshops and special programmes for coaches and referees in coordination with Asian and International Federation. Another objective that the committee is working is to establish an Omani women’s team. Moreover, OSSC will support any social and community programmes that require availability of skating sports,” Al Zaabi added.
With regard to the participation of national team in international tournaments, Al Zaabi said that Oman roller skating team will participate in the Asian tournament in India in February while ice hockey team will travel to Malaysia in March to take part at Asian championship.
“At the domestic level, the OSSC will organise a series of tournaments in ice hockey and roller skating like second edition of Oman Ice Hockey tournament. This year we will have the first version Oman roller skating and skating free style tournament.”
The chairman of OSSC pointed out that the committee has long-term plans and one of the strategic goals is working closely with Oman Schools Sports Association to find best ways to boost ice and skating sports among the students. “This will be as an investment for us for the near future to have better players.”
Sultan al Sinani, general secretary of OSSC, said the committee is working to widen the reach of skating sports in the Sultanate and position it as as a sports for youth. He mentioned that the committee will have close cooperation with regional and international federations to develop the sports in the country.
“We will target the students in schools where you can find the best talented players and provide them the right platform to grow and develop,” Al Sinani added.
The OSSC is chaired by Said Ali al Zaabi with Qasim al Barami, Saud al Oufi, Maryam Bani Oraba and Bader al Khudairi as members and Sultan al Sinani as the general secretary.
