Muscat: Khalid bin Hilal al Ma’wali (Wadi al Mawal) has been elected as chairman of the ninth term of Majlis Ash’shura by the newly-elected members through electronic voting on Sunday.
Voting is underway to elect two deputies.
Al Ma’wali has been elected as the chairman for the third consecutive term with 47 votes.
Yaqoob bin Mohammed bin Khalifa al Harthi from Qabil came second with 14 votes while Hilal bin Hamed bin Mohammed al Sarmi of Seeb came third with 10 votes.
Other candidates in the fray were Hassan bin Said bin Ali Kashob (Salalah), Rashid bin Ahmed bin Rashid al Shamsi (Buraimi), Sulayem bin Ali bin Sulayim al Hikmani (Mahout) and Yaqoob bin Mohammed bin Amur al Rahbi.
Earlier, the Secretariat-General of Majlis Ash’shura completed the preparations to make sure that the internal elections were conducted smoothly.
With 86 members elected, including two women, the ninth term of Majlis Ash’shura sees an additional member from the Wilayat of Liwa. Of these, 31 members have been reelected and 55 new members have been elected for the first time, Al Mahrouqi concluded.
