SALALAH: The Directorate-General of Culture, Sports and Youth in Dhofar Governorate is undertaking a comprehensive drive this year to expand recreational and sports facilities, host nearly 100 events, and significantly raise the occupancy and engagement levels at its centres and halls.

In its ongoing mission to enhance the quality of life for residents and promote active lifestyles, the Directorate has announced the implementation of 11 key projects across several wilayats.

These include installing lighting systems at Thamrait Centre and Taqah Club, as well as setting up an artificial turf field with fencing and lighting in the Dhahaboon area.

Additional projects include the installation of lighting and construction of perimeter fences at both Shaleem and Maqshan centres, supporting Rakhyout Sports Centre, and upgrading Al Mazyouna Centre with new lighting systems.

Musa bin Abdullah al Qasabi, Director-General of the Directorate-General of Culture, Sports and Youth in Dhofar, emphasised the Directorate’s commitment to empowering Omani youth. “Our goal is to develop youth leadership by providing diverse cultural, sports and community initiatives that not only engage, but also inspire,” he said.

So far in 2024, the Directorate's facilities have served 254,818 beneficiaries. Participation in organised events reached 122,448 individuals. In the cultural sector, 46 activities were held, benefiting 6,847 participants. Meanwhile, 19 sports and youth activities attracted 2,948 participants, and 6 women-focused events engaged 652 attendees.

The Directorate also rolled out 19 dynamic programmes under its Partnership and Empowerment Sector. These included the Military Discipline Programme, Dhofar International Theatre Festival, Omani Song Festival, Our Youth Forum, Gulf Soka Hexagonal Football Championship, Omani Traditional Games Season, Governorates Marathon, Arab Clubs Chess Championship, and the Arab World Festival for Cultural Creativity.

Al Qasabi further noted that several infrastructure projects are nearing completion this year.
