As hiking gains popularity in Oman, particularly during holidays like Eid, so has the need for swift and efficient rescue operations.

During the recent Eid break, police aviation units of the Royal Oman Police (ROP) carried out multiple rescues.

Two Omani citizens lost their way and became exhausted while hiking in Jabal Shams in the Wilayat of Al Hamra. They were successfully airlifted to safety and are reported to be in good health, according to ROP.

In another incident, a French tourist was rescued after sustaining injuries from a fall while mountaineering in the Wilayat of Bausher, Muscat Governorate. He was transported by police aviation to Khoula Hospital for treatment.

The ROP has reiterated the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and thorough planning before engaging in mountain activities.

Experts emphasise the importance of being aware of one's physical limits, understanding trail conditions, and always hiking with company. It’s also crucial to inform someone about your route, carry safety gear, and pack sufficient food, water, and appropriate clothing.

While temperatures in parts of Oman reached 40°C in places like the wilayats of Al Amerat and Sur, Jabal Shams remained much cooler, with a high of 19°C and a low of 10°C - conditions that can be deceptively challenging for hikers unprepared for rapid weather changes.

Fitness professionals recommend preparing physically for hikes through regular strength training, particularly targeting legs, glutes and core. Exercises like squats, lunges, and calf raises can help build the necessary endurance for mountain treks, according to Global Adventure Challenges.

With adventure tourism on the rise, these incidents serve as critical reminders of the need for awareness, preparation and caution on the trails.
