In the vibrant landscape of contemporary art, Hatim Al-Shaeili stands out as a masterful sculptor, weaving the rich narrative threads of Omani folklore into his innovative creations. One of his most captivating works, "The Enchanted Rooster," produced in 2024 using cutting-edge 3D printing technology and software like Blender, offers a fresh and dynamic take on an age-old tale, inviting viewers to embark on a magical journey through Oman's cultural heritage.

At the heart of "The Enchanted Rooster" lies an enthralling story. Picture a sorcerer from the wilayat of Rustaq, brimming with ambition, who sets out to challenge the renowned sorcerers of Bahla. Accompanied by a quirky rooster burdened with sacks of dates, he arrives in Bahla only to encounter a surprising twist: a young girl, the daughter of the town's greatest sorcerer, boldly commands a cow to walk along a clothesline. This stunning display of magic leaves the sorcerer awestruck, forcing him to reckon with the unparalleled might of Bahla’s enchantments and retreat in defeat.

What makes Al-Shaeili’s interpretation of this narrative particularly compelling is his ability to infuse it with an exhilarating mix of tension and mysticism. In "The Enchanted Rooster," he expertly merges traditional storytelling with modern artistic techniques, fostering a visual dialogue that resonates across generations. Yet, the path to creating such art is not without its challenges. Artists like Al-Shaeili strive to honour the cultural essence of their stories while embracing contemporary methods—an intricate balancing act that he navigates with skill.

The choice of plastic as a medium is a bold statement, reflecting the confluence of tradition and technology in today’s art scene. Al-Shaeili impressively renders every detail of the rooster and its heavy sacks, drawing viewers into a tactile experience that speaks both to the realism of the tale and the fantastical elements that lie within it. This rooster is no mere creature; it embodies vigilance and strength, symbolising the sorcerer’s aspirations and unyielding spirit. Curiously, the absence of the young girl and her magical cow invites the viewer to focus on the rooster, capturing that pivotal moment of anticipation before the sorcerer’s humbling defeat.

Beneath its enchanting surface, "The Enchanted Rooster" conveys profound messages about humility and the limitations we all face in our pursuits. It encapsulates the importance of respecting traditions and recognising the weight of one’s aspirations—essential lessons woven into the very fabric of Omani culture. Through his sculpture, Al-Shaeili beckons viewers into a rich narrative that captivates the imagination, igniting curiosity about Omani folklore, while simultaneously prompting introspection on broader themes of courage, humility, and the marvels that lie beyond our understanding.

With its striking composition and engaging storytelling, "The Enchanted Rooster" not only underscores the relevance of traditional narratives in contemporary art but also bridges the gap between past and present. It stands as a powerful testament to the ability of art to preserve and reinterpret cultural heritage, breathing new life into ancient tales while celebrating the innovative potential of digital sculpting. Al-Shaeili’s work is a vibrant reflection of Oman’s evolving sculptural scene, demonstrating how creativity can transcend boundaries and inspire admiration, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation of our shared cultural narratives.
