Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Civil Aviation Authority, will host the 11th meeting of the Virtual Laboratories Coordination Group for Centres of Excellence for Satellite Applications (VLMG-11) from January 20 to 23, 2025, at the Authority’s headquarters.
The event will bring together over 35 representatives from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), satellite agencies, and centres of excellence in satellite applications. Distinguished attendees include the President of WMO, the President of the European Organisation for Satellite Applications (EUMETSAT), and other key officials. The meeting will focus on fostering international collaboration in satellite technology and applications. Discussions will revolve around advancing training programmes, enhancing cooperation between training centres, and exchanging expertise and tools. A significant emphasis will be placed on supporting the transition to modern satellite technologies within WMO member states.
Participants will engage in joint working sessions to strategize future training activities, aiming to improve the utilisation of satellite products to safeguard lives and property.
This gathering coincides with the 50th anniversary of Oman’s accession to WMO, which the Sultanate of Oman joined in 1975. It also highlights Oman’s leadership in satellite applications, underscored by the inauguration of the Centre of Excellence for Training and Teaching Satellite Applications in Meteorology in 2006.
This initiative, established in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University, WMO, and EUMETSAT, serves West Asian and Middle Eastern countries. The event reflects Oman’s commitment to advancing meteorological science and fostering international cooperation in satellite applications.
