The Ministry of Health has launched the National Survey of Non-Communicable Diseases to design future health initiatives in the Sultanate of Oman. It was launched by Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidy, Governor of Muscat, in his office on Tuesday in the presence of officials. The survey, which was initiated in the Muscat Governorate, aims to collect data on high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory diseases, cancer and heart disease, in addition to analysing the risk factors associated with them. Dr Samira bint Musa al Maimani, Director-General of Health Services in Muscat Governorate, speaking to the Oman Daily Observer, said: “This will provide us with a database on the common non-communicable diseases prevailing in Oman. The selected areas will be representative samples. The survey will target individuals aged 15 years and above to identify the common morbidities that are prevalent.” This initiative is a significant step because future health projects will be based on this clinical evidence. The numbers will guide decision-makers in choosing effective interventions. “This survey will help us determine where we stand, evaluate our current performance level, measure progress, and identify strategies needed in alignment with Oman Vision 2040. This will ultimately reduce the economic burden of non-communicable diseases on the country,” Dr Samira added. The survey will cover all governorates of Oman, with each governorate divided into sectors and blocks. It will include both nationals and residents. The project aims to provide reliable information that contributes to formulating evidence-based strategic plans to address these health challenges and enhance prevention. Dr Samira noted that the results of the survey would help determine health priorities and develop policies that improve the quality of life for everyone in Oman. She called on all citizens and residents to cooperate and participate effectively to ensure the success of this national project, which serves the interests of all. Sayyid Al Busaidy praised the efforts made to organise this survey, emphasising the importance of collaboration between various parties to achieve the project’s objectives and ensure a sustainable, healthy future for society. This survey is part of the Ministry of Health’s plan to enhance the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, aligning with national, regional, and international efforts to promote community health.
