When His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik assumed power on January 11, 2020, he made a promise to the people of Oman and the world in his first speech to the nation. He promised to follow in the footsteps of his illustrious predecessor, but also launched the nation on a new phase of development
And he said that under his reign, Oman would continue to "promote peaceful solutions" to regional and global crises.
As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of HM's accession to power today, he has kept his word though hundreds of Royal Decrees and by launching many projects that ensured social welfare of citizens and diversified sources of income.
This day is a national occasion through which Oman renews its commitment to achieving progress and prosperity, inspired by the wise leadership’s directives.
It places the empowerment of Omani citizens at the forefront of its priorities and aims to build a strong, sustainable economy that enhances Oman’s global competitiveness and fulfils the aspirations of the Omani people for a better life rooted in innovation, modernity and sustainability.
His Majesty's leadership has spearheaded a series of reforms and initiatives aimed at modernising the country’s political, social and economic structures, positioning Oman as a competitive and progressive player on the global stage.
Within these first five years of his rule, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has made significant strides in steering Oman towards a more diversified economy while enhancing social welfare systems and strengthening international relations.
The unveiling of its comprehensive, integrated and progressive social protection system aligned with Oman Vision 2040, the 10th Five-Year Development Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals is a milestone in the nation's history.
The new law represents a significant shift towards a comprehensive and holistic approach to social protection across the life cycle. It ensures integration between social assistance and social insurance schemes to guarantee dignity and well-being for a decent standard of living and strengthens employment opportunities and active labour participation.
UN agencies have praised the new system, which puts vulnerable groups, including people with disability and children, at the heart of its design. The new system aligns with international best standards and practices and will enable Oman to build a productive and competitive economy.
The vision inspiring the comprehensive reforms was articulated by HM the Sultan on the occasion of Oman’s 50th National Day, where he expressed the government’s commitment to “providing the necessary protection and care for citizens to ensure that the state fulfils its basic duties, provide them with a decent life and spare them the effects that may result from some measures and financial policies.” The strong link between fiscal reforms and the investment in social protection was explicit through the intention to “direct part of the revenues of financial policies to the social protection system, so that it becomes a comprehensive national umbrella for the various efforts and actions of protection and social care.” It is clear that HM’s leadership will continue to drive Oman towards progress and prosperity.
