In recent years, Pilates has emerged as one of the most popular fitness regimes among women in Oman. Developed by the German trainer Joseph Pilates, this discipline integrates exercises designed for both the mind and body. Known as “Contrology,” or “the science of control,” Pilates emphasises the importance of using the mind to guide muscle movement. As Joseph Pilates himself asserted, “The mind is what sends the messages to initiate movement,” highlighting the unique nature of this practice.
What distinguishes Pilates from other forms of exercise is its emphasis on controlled, precise movements. It requires calmness, concentration, and deliberate execution to achieve balance, strength, and mastery over the body. Coach Noha Hasan, a Pilates instructor at a local gym in Oman, explains: “To achieve coordination, strength, and control, the movements must be slow and intentional. That’s the secret to Pilates’ effectiveness.”
The rise of Pilates has been significantly influenced by social media, where captivating videos and images showcase women performing exercises on specialised equipment. These posts have sparked interest, particularly among younger women. However, Coach Noha cautions: “Unfortunately, Pilates is often practised incorrectly due to a lack of guidance from trained professionals, which can lead to serious injuries.”
The accessibility of specialised Pilates equipment in many gyms has further enhanced the appeal of this practice. According to Coach Noha, “The modern equipment available in gyms has made Pilates more accessible and enjoyable. It is one of the reasons why people are encouraged to try it.”
While Pilates is particularly popular among younger women, it offers benefits for individuals of all ages. Its reliance on body weight makes it adaptable to various fitness levels and personal goals. Coach Noha notes: “Pilates isn’t merely a workout; it’s a fusion of therapy and training. It strengthens your body, enhances flexibility, and reduces the need for frequent clinic visits.”
For those new to Pilates, Coach Noha strongly recommends starting with private sessions to avoid common mistakes that could lead to serious injuries. She advises: “Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can build on that foundation and continue your practice with confidence.”
What makes Pilates an ideal choice for women, not just in Oman but globally, is its unique blend of therapeutic and physical benefits. Coach Noha emphasises: “Pilates is an investment in your health. It allows you to strengthen your body, increase energy levels, and release endorphins that leave you feeling satisfied.”
To further popularise Pilates in Oman, it is crucial to focus on the tangible results it offers. As women experience the benefits for themselves, their success stories will naturally inspire others to join. Coach Noha highlights: “The key is to encourage women to practise Pilates and witness the results. Once they do, they will motivate others to follow suit.”
As an Omani writer, I have observed how sports like Pilates can empower women throughout the Sultanate of Oman. This is not merely a fitness trend; it is a holistic approach to life that harmonises the mind and body. Pilates invites women in Oman to explore a practice that enhances their physical and mental well-being.
In Coach Noha's words: “Pilates is just one drop in the ocean of fitness, but it complements other forms of exercise by offering a unique combination of therapy and training.” It is a practice that allows women to prioritise their well-being, achieve balance, and invest in a healthier future, one movement at a time.
