MUSCAT, JAN 8

Coinciding with the arrival of the Italian naval ship Amerigo Vespucci in Muscat, a photography exhibition opened at the Sustainable City of Yiti premises on Muttrah Sea Road to highlight the shared maritime heritage between Italy and Oman.

'Voyages Across the Oceans: The Legacy of Amerigo Vespucci and Shabab Oman 2' was inaugurated by Mohammed al Zubair. It is jointly organised by the Royal Navy of Oman and Embassy of Italy in Oman.

The visit of the ship “Amerigo Vespucci” to Muscat from January 8 to 12 is an opportunity to strengthen cultural and maritime relations between the two countries.

The Italian Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman, Pierluigi D’Elia, said: “This exhibition is a testimony to the enduring maritime tradition that links Italy and Oman. The majestic voyages of the Amerigo Vespucci and Shabab Oman 2 not only symbolise the shared maritime heritage between our two countries, but also our mutual commitment to promoting cultural dialogue and cooperation.” He added: “These images not only capture the beauty and grandeur of these iconic ships, but also serve as a powerful reminder of the values they represent — cultural exchange, mutual understanding and the spirit of exploration that unites nations.”

The Captain of Shabab Oman 2 expressed his pride in participating in this event, stressing the importance of the ship as a symbol of peace and cultural exchange. “The Royal Navy of Oman is proud to support this initiative that highlights the Shabab Oman 2 ship as a symbol of peace, cultural exchange and maritime heritage. This event reflects our enduring connection to the sea and our commitment to promoting unity and mutual respect between cultures and emphasising the common values that unite us across the oceans.”

The photographs of the Amerigo Vespucci were taken by Italian naval photographer Petty Officer Maurizio Lapera, who was on board the ship to document its world tour.

The exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to explore the artistic and historical aspects of sea voyages, enhancing a shared understanding of the importance of maritime heritage and highlighting shared cultural values. The exhibition will be open to the public from January 8 to 12 daily from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm.

The exhibition was organised in collaboration with a number of partners, including Yiti Sustainable City, Renco Middle East, ASYAD, Pielle Italia, CML Middle East, F&M Middle East and the Italian Trade Agency. This collaboration aims to strengthen cultural ties between the Sultanate of Oman and Italy, by providing a rich visitor experience that reflects their shared history and strong maritime ties.
