Muscat: Legendary Italian naval ship, Amerigo Vespucci, has arrived at Sultan Qaboos Port on Wednesday morning.
Nearly 20,000 people, including students, have already registered to visit this historic vessel, which will remain in Muscat until January 12. The ship will be open to the public on January 9, 10, and 11, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore its iconic design and rich maritime history.
Dubbed ‘The Most Beautiful Ship in the World,’ the Amerigo Vespucci serves as a training ship for the Italian Navy and a Maritime Heritage Ambassador for UNESCO, UNICEF, and the Italian Republic. Its visit to Oman underscores the Sultanate's growing reputation as a prime destination for cruise ships and classic sailing vessels.
The Amerigo Vespucci, known for its vintage elegance and towering masts, is nearing the end of a two-year global voyage spanning 30 ports in 28 countries across five continents. Prior to Muscat, the ship made stops in Doha and Abu Dhabi. After its stay in Oman, it will sail to Safaga, Egypt, and Larnaca, Cyprus, before concluding its journey in La Spezia, Italy, next month.
Named after the renowned Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci—after whom the Americas are also named—the ship was launched in February 1931. Measuring 101 meters in length, including its bowsprit, the vessel's design evokes the golden age of sailing. A major refurbishment in 2016 modernized the 4,000-tonne ship, equipping it with state-of-the-art facilities, including an electric propulsion system.
Carrying a crew of around 270 sailors, the Amerigo Vespucci is a floating testament to Italy’s maritime heritage. Its presence in Oman offers a unique blend of history, culture, and modernity, drawing thousands of visitors eager to experience this magnificent vessel firsthand.
