The exploratory journey ‘Oman: Jewel of Arabia’ started from Al Suwaih beach in the Wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate. The journey spans 30 days, passing through North Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta Governorates, and concluding in Dhofar Governorate. It features the participation of several Omani youth and British enthusiasts, utilising traditional modes of transportation like camels and walking, in addition to modern means such as four-wheel-drive vehicles.
The expedition's journey aims to strengthen the historical ties between the Sultanate of Oman and the United Kingdom, highlight Oman’s cultural and natural heritage, and raise global awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability. It also seeks to position the Sultanate of Oman as a tourist destination that harmonises cultural and natural heritage, demonstrates its commitment to sustainability efforts, and develops youth skills in exploration and the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.
The journey will be documented through media coverage, a book, and promotional materials showcasing the experience, opening new horizons for cultural and tourism collaboration between the Sultanate of Oman and the world.
This journey retraces the route of the British explorer Bertram Thomas, one of the most prominent British explorers, who made history as the first European to cross the majestic Rub al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert in 1930-1931, accompanied by the Omani guide Sheikh Saleh bin Kalut. The arduous expedition lasted about two months, starting from Dhofar Governorate and concluding in Doha. Thomas documented the details of his adventure and the geographical region in various publications.
In preparation for his famous crossing of the Empty Quarter, Thomas conducted a trial journey in the winter of 1927, traveling 600 miles on camelback along the southern borders of Oman overlooking the Indian Ocean to Dhofar. During this trip, he strengthened his relationships with Arab tribes to secure guides and replace camels as needed. The journey ‘Oman: Jewel of Arabia’ will follow in his footsteps, relying on Thomas’ memoirs written during his travels.
Thomas documented significant cultural and environmental details about the Sultanate of Oman and the Empty Quarter and published his renowned book ‘Arabia Felix’, which showcased the beauty and diversity of the region to the world.
His legacy has been celebrated through various exploratory initiatives that emulate his journeys, reflecting the richness of Oman’s geography and natural landscapes
