MUSCAT: The Ministry of Education (MoE), through the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning, commemorated World Braille Day on January 4, underscoring the significance of Braille in enabling the participation of individuals with visual disabilities in education and public life.
In collaboration with Al Noor Association for the Blind, the Ministry organised a special exhibition. The event, inaugurated under the auspices of Shanoona al Habsi, Unicef Representative, and Assistant Director-General of the Directorate-General for Special Education and Continuous Learning, featured contributions from the Al Noor Association for the Blind and Omar bin Al Khattab Institute for the Blind.
The ceremony was attended by Ministry officials and professionals in the field of visual impairment.
The exhibition showcased the evolution of Braille, emphasising its importance in the lives of visually impaired individuals. It featured modern educational tools, technologies facilitating Braille learning and interactive activities that allowed visitors to experience Braille writing and reading firsthand. Additionally, student projects and innovations highlighted the creative potential of students with visual disabilities.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to Braille as a fundamental educational tool by providing Braille curricula, training specialised teachers and introducing advanced teaching technologies. Initiatives and programmes promoting Braille aim to integrate visually impaired students into mainstream education while fostering partnerships with local and international organisations to uphold the rights of individuals with disabilities.
By celebrating World Braille Day, the Ministry seeks to raise public awareness about Braille's role in societal integration and education.
The exhibition highlighted advancements in Braille learning, including innovations like science book drawings created using thermal transducers. It also showcased tools that enhance visual clarity for students with visual disabilities, promoting inclusivity and accessibility in education.
