Muscat: The Ministry of Social Development (MOSD) issued a decision to change the name of the Oman Astronomical Society to Oman Astronomical and Space Society.
The objectives of the society include bringing together those interested in astronomy and space in the Sultanate of Oman to exchange and disseminate their knowledge in this field, following up on important astronomical and space events, introducing them to the public, and encouraging interest in astronomy and space in educational institutions to expand the scope of scientific culture.
The society will work as a communication center for astronomical and space activities within the Sultanate of Oman, interact with astronomical and space societies abroad, and cooperate with the relevant authorities to preserve the meteorites of astronomical importance found in the Sultanate of Oman.
It will promote the establishment of dark sky reserves and create suitable climates protected from negative pollution for the benefit of future generations encourage the conduct of astronomical and space research and studies and the establishment of astronomical centers in the Sultanate of Oman.
The society will encourage the preservation and documentation of Oman's astronomical heritage and the dissemination of astronomical culture among the general public.
The association will be managed by a board of directors consisting of nine members and its term is two years, and it is permissible to reelect those members at the end of their term.
Oman Astronomical and Space Society will meet its financial requirements from member subscriptions, donations, gifts, and grants, provided that the Minister approves their acceptance, revenues from activities, and government subsidies, among others.
