MUSCAT: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in collaboration with the Directorate-General of Arts and the Omani Society for Fine Arts (OSFA), proudly inaugurated the ‘Ornament of Oman’ (Zukhrufat Oman) exhibition, a magnificent celebration of Islamic ornamentation art. This landmark event, hosted at the Omani Society for Fine Arts, was launched under the esteemed auspices of Sayyid Said bin Sultan al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Culture. The opening ceremony drew a vibrant gathering of art aficionados, cultural advocates, and members of the local community, all united by their appreciation for Oman’s rich artistic legacy. The exhibition is the crowning achievement of the ‘Ijtiyaz’ Programme, an innovative cultural and artistic initiative aimed at fostering talent, preserving heritage, and advancing the intricate skills associated with Islamic ornamentation. The programme, organised by the OSFA, is a testament to the ministry's commitment to nurturing traditional art forms and empowering local artists. Over a year, 12 Omani female artists participated in the programme under the expert mentorship of the renowned artist Anwar bint Khalifa bin Rabeea al Hassaniyah.
These talented women delved deeply into the aesthetic and technical aspects of Islamic ornamentation, honing their skills through a meticulously designed curriculum that balanced theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice. The training included theoretical lectures exploring the cultural significance and historical evolution of Islamic ornamentation, practical workshops focused on mastering various techniques and artistic styles, and research presentations on traditional materials and their application in ornamentation. A particular emphasis was placed on integrating ornamentation art with Arabic calligraphy, further enriching the creative possibilities within this discipline. At the heart of the programme’s success lies the artists' ability to translate their learning into stunning creations. The exhibition showcases 60 remarkable works, each a labour of love and a reflection of the artists’ creativity and dedication. From intricate floral and geometric patterns to classic gilding designs, the pieces exemplify the enduring beauty and relevance of Islamic ornamentation in contemporary art. The ‘Ornament of Oman’ exhibition served as a platform for cultural exchange, fostering dialogue between artists and the broader community. It underscores the vital role of Islamic ornamentation in shaping Omani cultural identity and highlights the importance of preserving and reviving this art form for future generations. This celebration of artistic innovation and heritage marks not only the successful conclusion of the first season of the ‘Ijtiyaz’ Programme but also a renewed commitment to the development and promotion of Omani arts on a national and international stage.
