The tiny village of Hadash is a hidden gem perched at an elevation of 1,500 metres at the foot of craggy cliffs, flanked by the dramatic landscapes of the Western Hajar mountains. Surrounded by lush greenery and terraced farms that characterise this region, Hadash offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural allure.

As winter blankets the landscape, the village becomes an inviting destination for outdoor enthusiasts eager to embrace the stunning vistas and exhilarating adventures that await. From Hadash, a journey unfolds, leading adventurers up to Qarn Hadash (The Horn of Hadash) with spectacular views over the Wadi Mustal basin. Just a little further along, hikers can gaze upon the neighbouring village of Saih Qatna and the breathtaking Qarn Wakan (The Horn of Wakan).

With its impressive panoramas and tranquil atmosphere, Hadash serves as a perfect base not just for hiking, but also for exploring the myriad of attractions and activities for which the region is renowned. The nearby village of Wakan, famous for its terraced farms and striking scenery, adds to the charm, making this area a sought-after spot for both locals and travellers alike.

Hiking: A Serene Experience

Perhaps the highlight of Hadash in winter is the emerging popularity of hiking, specifically the Wakan-Hadash mountain path that enchants trekkers with its picturesque scenery. This moderately difficult trail weaves through the impressive mountain ranges, providing a beautiful perspective of Oman’s natural wonders along with panoramic views of the terraced villages below and the majestic peaks surrounding them.

As you embark on this trek, it’s essential to stay mindful of your surroundings and the trail's challenges. “The hike is relatively well-marked with green, yellow, and white flag markers,” making navigation easier. However, be prepared for steep inclines and a notably steep descent, particularly when approaching the Wakan Pass. Bringing along a walking pole can be a game-changer, especially for those who may experience discomfort in their knees after the descent.

Additionally, winter weather conditions could lead to changes in trail safety, so it’s wise to check forecasts and assess trail conditions before heading out. While the trek from Hadash to Wakan is filled with breathtaking moments, ensure you have a backup plan in case you need to adjust your route or return early due to unforeseen circumstances.

Hadash emerges as a perfect winter haven for anyone looking to bask in nature's glory through hiking and rock climbing. With its stunning landscapes and friendly community, this captivating village invites you to experience the peace and adventure that Northern Oman has to offer.

Rock Climbing: A Thrilling Challenge

For those looking to add a dash of adrenaline to their winter escape, the climbing opportunities near Hadash are not to be missed. As noted by seasoned climbers, Oman is a hidden gem in the rock-climbing world, particularly within the stunning landscapes of Wadi Mistal. The climbing routes, established since 2007, have expanded to nearly fifty well-equipped options, capturing the hearts of adventurers who crave excitement against a backdrop of gorgeous limestone cliffs.

With a range of difficulties and breathtaking views over the Wadi Mistal, climbers are greeted with a peaceful, natural atmosphere. However, safety should always be a priority when tackling these routes. “The distances between the points can sometimes be a bit far,” warn frequent visitors, emphasising the importance of a reliable climbing partner and good communication. Whether you're an experienced climber or a novice eager to try, the crags around Hadash promise both adventure and unforgettable memories.

Driving to Hadash

To drive to Hadash, begin your journey from Route 1 if you’re coming from Muscat, heading towards Sohar along the coast. After approximately 25 km, exit at Barka onto Route 13, which leads towards Nakhal. Continue driving past Nakhal for about 15 km further along Route 13 until you reach Al Awabi. Look for a left turn onto the road signposted for Wadi Mistal. The first 10 km of this road is tarmacked, after which you will transition to a wider dirt track that leads into the plain pf Wadi Mistal. Drive straight until you encounter a fork, where you should take the right path towards Hadash.

Be prepared for the final stretch, which comprises about 3 km of narrow, steep, and uneven dirt road—drive cautiously to safely reach the village of Hadash, where you can park around the village entrance. Upon arrival, expect to begin your scenic hike up to Qarn Hadash, ascending approximately 1,400 metres in elevation, and enjoy stunning views over Wadi Mistal. As you move through Hadash, you’ll encounter friendly locals and likely see goats roaming freely. The area offers lush greenery and fresh water as you navigate the village.

Hadash is renowned for its rock climbing opportunities, with spots like Read’s Wall and Sulfureuse Crag appealing to climbing enthusiasts, so bringing climbing gear is advisable. The hike from Hadash to Wakan presents a moderate challenge, featuring steep inclines and picturesque views, particularly from the plateau. Plan for around 6-7 hours to complete the hike with breaks, and consider bringing a walking pole or stick for added support during the descent. Lastly, engage with the local community and relish the serene atmosphere, making this trip a perfect escape for nature lovers.
