Al Suwaiq: The Environment Authority in the Wilayat of Al Suwaiq is spearheading efforts to promote the circular economy, a sustainable model that minimises waste and maximises resource reuse.

The Authority has launched initiatives to raise awareness, foster collaboration, and implement practical solutions to establish a circular economy culture in the region. “Our efforts focus on educating the community about the benefits of the circular economy while collaborating with key stakeholders to turn ideas into actionable projects,” said Shaikh Hamoud bin Sulaiman al Harrasi, Head of the Environment Centre in the Wilayat of Al Suwaiq.

These efforts include engaging schools, where students are encouraged to brainstorm and implement recycling initiatives. One of the standout projects involves recycling construction and demolition waste in partnership with be’ah, Oman’s leading waste management company.

This collaboration has successfully transformed waste into reusable materials, showcasing the practical applications of the circular economy in Al Suwaiq.

This project is part of a broader environmental sanitation campaign aimed at rehabilitating old landfill sites and converting them into green spaces, aligning with global climate goals.

Shaikh al Harrasi revealed plans to integrate a student-led competition in 2025, encouraging school companies in the wilayats of Al Suwaiq and Al Khabourah to develop innovative recycling projects. A recently held workshop organised by the Environment Centre brought together experts, academics, and community members to discuss the circular economy’s potential.

Presentations included “Global and Regional Experiences in Waste Management,” delivered by Mubarak bin Salim al Kalbani, and a case study by Jamal from be’ah on recycling construction waste.

Students from Ahad Basic Education School added a creative element to the workshop with their play, Fruitful Initiatives, emphasising the role of youth in driving sustainability efforts.

An accompanying exhibition provided a platform for knowledge exchange among government representatives, businesses, researchers, and students.

Shaikh al Harrasi highlighted the sustainability, innovation, and economic growth that the circular economy promises. “With the right support and collaboration of different community authorities related to environmental support, Al Suwaiq can lead the way in circular economy practices,” he said.
