MUSCAT: The Oman Film Society marked ‘World Cinema Day’ with a vibrant celebration at its headquarters in Airport Heights, showcasing its commitment to fostering the cinematic arts in the Sultanate of Oman.


The event, held under the auspices of Her Highness Sayyidah Hujaija bint Jaifer al Said, brought together prominent figures from the film industry to celebrate Omani cinema’s remarkable strides in 2024.


In his keynote address, Mohammed bin Abdullah al Ajmi, Chairman of the Oman Film Society, emphasised the society’s milestones, underscoring Omani cinema’s strong presence on regional and international platforms. He highlighted achievements such as the participation of 27 members in global festivals and 25 films across genres receiving recognition, resulting in 29 international awards from 46 film festivals.


The event also showcased the involvement of 12 members in prestigious festival arbitration committees, reflecting international trust in Omani film-making expertise.


Rana bint Nasser al Abriyah, director of the event, applauded the achievements and reiterated the role of cinema in preserving cultural identity and sharing Omani creativity with the world.


A comprehensive report detailed the Oman Film Society’s accomplishments in 2024, including organising five international film festivals that attracted 1,373 submissions from 122 countries. Notably, 115 Omani films were featured, and key productions such as ‘Corona Melody’ and ‘Dirty Feet’ were highlighted.


The ceremony concluded with the screening of these films, audience interactions, a live musical performance by Tahera Jamal, and the honouring of contributors to Omani cinema.


The event reaffirmed the association’s dedication to advancing the film sector and elevating Oman’s cultural prominence on the global stage.
