SALALAH: The Directorate-General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate has presented the findings from the seventh season of archaeological work at Al Baleed Archaeological Site. The results were showcased in a multimedia session held at Al Baleed Archaeological Park in Salalah.
Dr Alexia Pavan, Deputy Head of the Archaeological Mission from the University of Naples, Italy, led a visual presentation detailing the latest discoveries and survey work. She highlighted the excavation efforts south of the fort and Al Baleed Mosque, near Al Farda area, and the road leading to the site's southwestern gate.
Among the notable discoveries were a building with several small rooms, areas used as stoves and numerous ovens. Additionally, quantities of shells and various archaeological artefacts were uncovered, including items locally made and others originating from India, Africa and China.
These findings date back to the 16th to 18th centuries, offering new insights into the site's historical significance.
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has been collaborating with the University of Naples on archaeological studies and excavations at Al Baleed for seven seasons.
This season’s work began in early December, with plans underway to implement restoration projects for Al Baleed Fort and Al Baleed Mosque within the archaeological park.
The presentation was part of the Directorate-General of Heritage and Tourism’s 2024 programme to showcase updates from ongoing archaeological missions and research, shedding light on the rich history of Dhofar Governorate. - ONA
