MUSCAT, DEC 28: Arun Thadhaagath, a daring cyclist from Kerala, is on an extraordinary solo journey across the globe. Having started his adventure from the Paris Olympics venue, he has already pedaled through numerous countries in Europe and the Middle East, including Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Türkiye and the UAE.
Now, he finds himself in Oman, where he plans to stay for the next month before continuing his travels across Europe, Asia and Africa.
Oman plays a crucial part in Arun’s route, marking a significant stop as he heads towards the next stages of his journey. “I am excited to experience Oman’s culture and landscapes, which are truly unique,” Arun shared.
Reflecting on his time in Oman, Arun expressed deep appreciation for the hospitality extended by the Omani people. “The kindness of Omanis has been overwhelming. Whether cycling through bustling towns or remote villages, I was always greeted with smiles, offers of food, and shelter. Oman has some of the best roads in the world and I would certainly love to return,” he said.
His travels are made possible by a bank loan, a bold move inspired by the idea that people typically take loans for cars or homes — but why not invest in a life-changing adventure? “This is not just a trip; it’s a lifelong investment in experiences,” he said.
The journey, which spans two years, is driven by Arun’s passion for cultural exchange. He views each encounter with new people as a valuable opportunity to learn and connect. “Traveling is not about destinations. It’s about the people you meet and the stories you share,” he noted, emphasising the importance of direct human connection.
Arun, who takes pride in representing his Malayali heritage, also sees this journey as a way to inspire others. “For all Malayalees and Indians, this is a journey to be proud of,” he said. His travels have already garnered attention worldwide, with media outlets covering his remarkable story, including a feature in Indian dailies Malayala Manorama and Deshabhimani.
Seeking sponsorships to support the continuation of his voyage, Arun highlights the unique marketing opportunities for brands. “Sponsors can display their logos and advertisements on my gear, gaining exposure not just in Oman but across multiple continents,” he explained. The visibility is not limited to just the two-year journey; his story is continuously shared on global media platforms, making it a powerful branding tool.
Cycling, for Arun, is not just about the thrill of travel. It’s about interaction. “On a bicycle, you’re seen and you see people eye to eye. It’s the best way to connect with others,” he said. No other mode of transport offers such direct engagement, making his journey even more meaningful.
After Oman, Arun will continue his adventure, heading back to the UAE and across Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Türkiye before entering Europe. His route will take him through Italy, Spain, and Scandinavia, followed by Central Asia, Russia, China, and Nepal, before finally returning to India.
