If you're not a motosports fan, then this might have totally gone off your radar but in the course of the last few weeks starting December 13 and continuing until January 4, hundreds of motosports loving Omanis and Oman-based expats had been driving in droves to Tal Moreeb, the UAE’s tallest dune, in Al Dhafra region for Liwa 2025.
But what prompts this mass visit? It’s the allure of high-octane racing, thrilling drifting competitions, and exhilarating dune-bashing experiences, all set against a backdrop of live entertainment, family-friendly activities, and rich cultural moments.
In recent years, Oman has emerged as a burgeoning centre for motorsports, captivating fans with its thrilling events and diverse landscapes. The burgeoning popularity of motorsports in the Sultanate is underpinned by several critical factors that resonate deeply with Omani culture.
At the core of this enthusiasm is a profound passion for speed and adventure. Oman’s unique geography, characterised by vast, undulating deserts and rugged mountains, creates the ideal setting for electrifying motorsport activities. From rally racing to off-road challenges, the varied terrain allows both local and international drivers to showcase their prowess in visually stunning environments.
Drifting, in particular, has gained significant traction over the last decade. Competitions highlight the extraordinary skill and control that drivers exhibit as they navigate winding tracks with precision. Simultaneously, off-road events, including heart-stopping desert safaris and demanding 4x4 challenges, offer fans the opportunity to immerse themselves in the experience.
As the motorsport scene in Oman burgeons, an increasing number of car enthusiasts are venturing beyond their borders to explore their passion for racing. This trend is propelled by a desire for more challenging competitions, as Omani drivers aspire to test their mettle against seasoned competitors in neighbouring countries renowned for attracting a higher calibre of talent.
Since the commencement of Liwa 2025, numerous Omani competitors have successfully crossed the border to participate, with many excelling in various events. Over the past few weeks, master drivers have dazzled spectators with their dramatic drifting skills during the Freestyle Drift and the high-octane Buggy Torque Challenge, both showcasing action-packed races across the sand dunes.
The previous weekend saw the Liwa Drift Championship and thrilling Bike Drag Racing event drawing participants from Oman. Their performance elicited full support from families and friends, evoking a sense of camaraderie that felt reminiscent of home. "It’s like an extension of our activities back home," one Omani attendee remarked, reflecting the close-knit nature of the motorsport community.
Partaking in events abroad not only offers thrilling competition but also invaluable networking possibilities. Car aficionados can connect with a wider motorsport community, building friendships and collaborations that could enhance their future racing endeavours and enrich the regional motorsport culture.
Beyond racing, a family-centric event
Beyond the adrenaline of racing, a standout attraction at the Liwa Festival is the Classic Cars Exhibition. Here, vintage vehicles are celebrated as true works of art. The collection of classic off-road vehicles includes a 1970 Series One Range Rover, alongside vintage Ferraris and Mercedes convertibles.
In Oman and the UAE, cars transcend mere transportation; they embody pride and passion. Owners invest countless hours restoring these vehicles to perfection, and visitors to the exhibition can marvel at these rare treasures, each a testament to its owner's dedication.
The focal point of most activities is Liwa Village, which is a masterpiece in itself, resembling a mirage at night as it transforms the typically quiet desert into a vibrant setting. From a distance, the flickering lights are hard to miss, and on certain nights, the fireworks in the background create a magnificent spectacle. The village is thoughtfully divided into various segments, each offering unique activities. At its heart stands the iconic Ferris wheel, providing guests with a bird's eye view of the entire village. From the souq to the thrilling rides and activity areas, it is a well-designed venue that effectively ensures all attractions are accessible to guests.
Adding to the event's allure, Falcon Racing takes centre stage, symbolising an enduring Emirati tradition that fuses the age-old art of falconry with modern technological advancements. Attendees are enchanted by the speed and agility of these majestic birds, a powerful illustration of the unique bond between falconers and their avian partners.
The festival caters to visitors of all ages, offering a plethora of family-oriented activities. Attendees can take in breathtaking aerial views of the desert from hot air balloon rides or be captivated by the acrobatic feats of the Hollywood Circus. New this year is the Shams Liwa Ferris Wheel, offering panoramic views of the striking desert landscape, alongside the Wanasa Zone, a hub for gaming and off-road excursions.
Cultural heritage takes centre stage, with events such as camel and horse racing, as well as traditional performances enriching the festival experience. A video projection on Moreeb Dune showcases racing legends each night, heightening the festival's vibrant atmosphere. Furthermore, the Moreeb Dune Market features local handicrafts and camping gear, providing visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the artistry and culture of the region.
As the festival approaches its climax, renowned artists Mahmoud Al Turki and Aseel Hameem are set to perform on December 28, promising a night of unforgettable melodies. Hours before the New Year dawns, Abadi Al Johar and Rahma Riad will lead the countdown with a medley of classic and contemporary hits, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display to herald the arrival of 2025.
