BAGHDAD: The Omani-Iraqi Joint Committee on Sunday held its 9th meeting in Baghdad. The meeting was co-chaired by Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, and Dr Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iraq.


In his speech during the meeting, Sayyid Badr said that “Omani-Iraqi relations are deep-rooted in history. They are based on common visions aimed to achieve prosperity for the two peoples and the region at large.”


Sayyid Badr expressed Oman's keenness to implement plans of cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, culture, and tourism in a way that achieves the aspirations of the two countries.


Sayyid Badr also commended the active role of Iraq in addressing Arab and regional concerns, most notably the Palestinian cause. In this context, he stressed the importance of achieving security and stability in the region through joint cooperation and constructive dialogue.


For his part, Dr Fuad Hussein underscored the positive role of the Sultanate of Oman in highlighting Arab and regional issues and Oman’s commendable efforts in achieving security and stability in the region. He reiterated Iraq's keenness to strengthen the bonds of cooperation with the Sultanate of Oman.


Dr Fuad expressed his keenness to enhance coordination and joint action in a way that achieves the common interests of the two countries and supports the stability and prosperity of the region.


At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on enhancing political and diplomatic cooperation.


The first MoU was inked by the Foreign Ministry of the Sultanate of Oman and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq. It dealt with cooperation in the field of political consultation.


The second MoU, dealing with cooperation in the fields of diplomatic studies and training, was signed by the Oman Diplomatic Academy and the Foreign Service Institute of Iraq.


The two sides affirmed their keenness to enhance coordination among relevant institutions in a manner that achieves sustainable development and consolidates the bonds of fraternity and partnership. The signing ceremony was attended by officials from the two countries. — ONA
