MUSCAT: In an effort to foster inclusivity and empower persons with disabilities, the Ministry of Social Development organised a discussion panel under the theme ‘Together for a More Inclusive Society in the Labour Market in the Sultanate of Oman'. The event aimed to enhance collaboration across sectors and bolster initiatives for economic empowerment of persons with disabilities.
The session, held in conjunction with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, was inaugurated by Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas, Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI). It was conducted in partnership with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, Sultan Qaboos University, the Central Bank of Oman (CBO), the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), the Oman Human Rights Commission and Ooredoo.
The discussion panel spotlighted the rights of persons with disabilities and highlighted the collective efforts of government, civil society and private entities to empower this segment of society. Success stories were shared, showcasing the resilience and achievements of persons with disabilities.
Labiba al Maawali, Director-General of Social Development in Muscat Governorate, underscored the importance of unified efforts, saying, "This session brings together partner agencies to address the rights and legislation related to persons with disabilities. By removing societal barriers and addressing challenges, we aim to achieve genuine empowerment and equality for this group.”
The Sultanate of Oman has consistently prioritised the well-being of persons with disabilities through care, protection, rehabilitation and training programmes. Mechanisms have been established to ensure accessible services, benefits and community integration, in line with Oman’s commitment to international standards.
Hala al Wahaibi, Director of the Department of Persons with Disabilities at the Ministry of Social Development, emphasised the panel's purpose: "This initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between government agencies, civil society and private institutions, fostering practical recommendations to enhance the lives of persons with disabilities and ensure their full societal participation.”
As part of Oman Vision 2040, the Ministry has prepared a national guide for engineering standards and specifications for an inclusive urban environment and accessible transportation, reflecting the country's focus on empowering persons with disabilities and harnessing their potential.
The event featured a tour of an exhibition showcasing products by persons with disabilities, followed by two visual presentations. The first highlighted their talents and contributions under the title ‘Together for a More Inclusive Society', while the second showcased initiatives aimed at empowering this group, titled ‘Support and Empowerment'.
The discussion panel marked a significant step towards bridging gaps and creating an inclusive labour market, reinforcing Oman’s commitment to advancing the rights and opportunities of persons with disabilities.
