MUTTRAH: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, represented by the Literary Forum, organised the Muttrah Through History Symposium, a deep dive into the rich legacy of one of Oman’s oldest cities.
Under the auspices of Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidy, Governor of Muscat, the two-day event brought together historians, researchers and cultural enthusiasts to explore Muttrah’s significance as a commercial and cultural hub.
The symposium delved into topics such as:
Muttrah in Visual Arts: Dr Fakhriya al Yahyai explored how artists and photographers captured the city’s charm through creative works.
Muttrah and Oman Vision 2040: Dr Abdul Karim al Lawati discussed Muttrah’s alignment with Oman Vision 2040, emphasising cultural authenticity and creativity.
Historical Medical Services: Dr Salim bin Mohammed al Hinai shed light on the city’s medical practices from 1909 to 1970, examining health challenges and societal responses.
Muttrah in Orientalist Writings: Dr Hilal bin Said al Hajri reflected on the city’s portrayal in works by Western travellers and diplomats.
Scientific contributions: Dr Nasser bin Abdullah al Saqri highlighted the contributions of Muttrah’s scholars and educational institutions from 1888 to 1970.
Al Busaidy remarked, “Muttrah’s historical legacy, shaped by its strategic location, reflects Oman’s role as a bridge between civilisations.”
Nasser bin Salem al Sawafi, Assistant Director-General of the Literary Forum, emphasised the Ministry’s focus on research and documentation, with the symposium serving as a steppingstone towards publishing comprehensive studies on Oman’s cities. – ONA
