MUSCAT: Al Buraimi University hosted a scientific symposium titled 'Research Chairs in Promoting Education, Scientific Research and Knowledge Transfer', under the auspices of Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. The event was organised collaboratively by the Ministry, Al Buraimi University, and the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.
In her opening remarks, Dr Rahma emphasised the vital role of research chairs in advancing education and generating new knowledge. She highlighted their significance in student training, postgraduate supervision, and the attraction of international researchers, noting that these chairs foster partnerships that elevate Oman’s global academic reputation. She advocated for more research chairs to support key national economic priorities and called for enhanced institutional backing and qualified personnel.
Dr Rahma also acknowledged the legacy of the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, whose initiatives in scientific research positioned Oman prominently on the global stage, with research chairs established at prestigious universities such as Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford and George Washington. She discussed the foundational work of the Research Council, initiated in 2011, including the establishment of nanotechnology and materials science chairs at the Sultan Qaboos University and the University of Nizwa, respectively.
The symposium covered essential topics, including the Ministry's support for research chairs, the contribution of international organisations to sustainable development, and successful local and international case studies.
Key recommendations included revitalising the research chairs programme under the name of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, encouraging universities to align research with Oman Vision 2040, involving the private sector in funding, and holding annual symposia to assess progress.
Research chairs are strategic tools for sustainable development, driving collaboration and innovation to address economic, social and environmental challenges. This symposium is a significant step towards enhancing Oman’s research landscape, signalling a promising era of academic and research advancement.
