SALALAH: The Dhofar Governorate, globally renowned for its pristine beaches, verdant landscapes, and the Khareef Dhofar Season, witnessed over 51,000 visitors during its annual Frankincense season. This cultural extravaganza highlighted one of the governorate’s oldest and most valued traditions — the harvesting and trade of frankincense, which has deep historical roots in the Arabian Peninsula.

Visitors were invited to immerse themselves in the journey of frankincense, beginning with demonstrations of ancient harvesting techniques by skilled locals, followed by interactive workshops explaining its usage in perfumery, medicine and religious rituals.

Guided tours through Dhofar's aromatic wadis and frankincense trees provided a unique, sensory-filled experience, complemented by storytelling sessions that delved into the governorate's significance in the ancient incense trade routes.

The festival also included a vibrant lineup of cultural performances, traditional music, and culinary delights, giving attendees a taste of Dhofari heritage. Organisers emphasised the event’s dual mission of cultural preservation and economic development, with local artisans and traders benefiting from increased visitor interest. Such initiatives continue to position Dhofar as a sought-after destination for cultural tourism. — ONA
