Muscat: Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, issued Ministerial Decision No. 285/2024 on Sunday, establishing a reserve for Ghaf trees (Mesquite trees) in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate. This initiative came in a significant move towards environmental conservation.

The newly designated “Ghaf Trees Reserve” will remain under protection for 30 years, according to the decision.

Key strategies outlined for the reserve include the implementation of modern methods to maintain soil quality and enhance biodiversity monitoring.

The authority will put efforts into preserving Ghaf trees and other native vegetation.

According to the decision, several measures will also be taken to rehabilitate threatened species and improve natural water systems to support water conservation.

The reserve will incorporate renewable energy technologies and efficient water-use practices in collaboration with relevant authorities.

Scientific research will play a pivotal role in the initiative, with studies designed to analyze ecosystems and advance conservation strategies.

The new initiative will help explore ecotourism opportunities, which aim to offer sustainable investment prospects while engaging the local community to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity.

Meanwhile, the reserve underscores the Authority’s commitment to protecting Oman’s unique natural heritage while promoting sustainable development and environmental awareness.
