MUSCAT: The Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) organised a symposium in Muscat to discuss the state of food security in Oman, investment opportunities, and the role of technology in boosting agricultural output. Key stakeholders, including government officials and industry leaders, participated in the event.
The symposium was inaugurated by Eng Yaqoub bin Khalfan al Busaidi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Fisheries. Rashid bin Amer al Musalhi, First Deputy Chairman of the OCCI, highlighted the symposium's objective to enhance Oman’s agricultural and fisheries sectors as critical components of its food security system and economic diversification strategy.
Eng Saleh bin Mohammed al Shanfari, Chairman of the OCCI Food Security Committee, emphasised Oman’s advanced position in global food security indicators, attributing success to collaborative efforts among farmers, fishermen, and government bodies. He noted that ongoing investment initiatives are enhancing production, increasing exports, and reducing food import costs.
Discussions also covered the roles of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, and Oman Investment Authority in food security projects, alongside innovative platforms like "Tatweer" for investment and "Bahar" for fisheries solutions. Other highlights included experiences shared by Silal Central Market and advancements in tissue culture labs.
