MUSCAT: Oman will aim for their third consecutive win in the Socca World Cup 2024 when they take on Canada at the Sports Makers Stadium at Oman Automobile Association (OAA). Monday’s match, scheduled for 8 pm, will feature 11 other matches and will play a crucial role in determining the teams that advance to the knockout stage of this highly competitive tournament.

Under the guidance of coach Nasr al Wahaibi, the national team is focused on securing a spot in the knockout stage by finishing in the top two positions of Group A. “We are very glad with our scores in the previous matches. Our focus has now shifted to the remaining two games against Canada and Qatar. I believe we have good chances to qualify and compete for the top places in the event,” the Oman coach said.

Oman began their tournament with an impressive 3-1 victory over Italy, with goals scored by Motasim al Balushi, Ali al Harthy and Mahmood al Balushi, while Jorge Fernandes netted the only goal for the Italian side.

In their second match, Oman edged the US with a narrow 1-0 win, thanks to a decisive goal from Loay al Wahaibi. Currently, Qatar leads Group A with six points, having defeated Canada 3-0 in the opener and the US 4-0 in the second match. Oman also has six points but stands second due to goal difference. Italy is in third place with three points, while the US and Canada remain without points.

In Group B, Serbia leads with two wins, having beaten Libya 3-2 and Bulgaria 1-0. Iraq dominates Group C, while Brazil tops Group D after a solid performance against Egypt in their opening match. Group E is fiercely contested, with France, Pakistan, and Türkiye all tied on three points. In Group F, Mexico and Albania share the top spot, while Romania and Uruguay are on track to advance from Group G. Finally, in Group H, South Africa and Argentina are leading the standings.

The competition across all groups remains intense as teams battle for a place in the next stage.
