Leadership is often defined by resilience, vision, and the ability to inspire others. For Tariq al Habsi, the Founder and CEO of Omani tech start-up Zameeli, these qualities have been central to his journey. In an interview with Observer, Tariq shared his insights on leadership, the challenges he has faced, and his advice for aspiring leaders.

“Leadership isn’t just about strategy — it’s about understanding and connecting with your team. When people feel heard and supported, they bring their best ideas and energy to the table,” he explained, reflecting on how he has guided Zameeli to success in Oman’s growing gig economy.

A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE AND VISION

Tariq’s path to becoming a CEO began with a strong sense of purpose. Recognising a gap in the freelance economy, he envisioned a platform that could empower individuals and elevate their professional standing. This vision laid the foundation for Zameeli, which has since grown into a trusted platform for freelancers in Oman.

“My journey has been a mix of persistence, vision, and a deep belief in the potential of innovation,” Tariq shared. However, the early days were not without challenges. Resource constraints and market scepticism tested his resilience, but he remained focused on his mission. “We tackled those obstacles by investing in technology, fostering trust, and staying true to our values,” he noted.

Tariq’s ability to lead with clarity and adaptability also helped him manage the company’s rapid growth. By implementing robust systems and building a collaborative culture, he ensured Zameeli maintained its high standards even as it expanded.

LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES

As a leader, Tariq believes in setting the tone for his team through transparency and empowerment. “I see myself as a guide who fosters an environment where every team member feels valued and motivated to contribute their best,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of purpose in leadership. “Never lose sight of why you started. Purpose is the compass that will guide you through both successes and setbacks,” Tariq advised. This clarity of purpose has not only shaped his leadership style but also enabled Zameeli to make a meaningful impact on freelancers’ lives.

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING LEADERS

For the next generation of leaders, Tariq’s advice is simple yet profound. “Stay curious and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth,” he said. He stressed the importance of building relationships and seeking diverse perspectives. “Leadership is a continuous learning process. Surround yourself with people who challenge you and bring new ideas to the table.”

Empathy, he added, is a critical skill. “Take the time to understand the people you lead. Leadership is as much about listening as it is about decision-making,” he noted.

BALANCING LEADERSHIP AND PERSONAL GROWTH

Despite the demands of running Zameeli, Tariq prioritises personal growth and well-being. He highlighted the importance of self-reflection, continuous learning, and time with family to maintain balance. “Balancing leadership with personal growth requires intentionality,” he said. Delegating responsibilities and setting boundaries are also essential to his approach.

VISION FOR THE FUTURE

When asked about his long-term vision, Tariq expressed a commitment to driving change in Oman’s freelance industry. “Our goal is to empower freelancers with tools, resources, and opportunities to thrive in the evolving gig economy,” he explained. With Zameeli continuing to grow, he envisions a more inclusive industry where Omani talent is recognized globally.

His journey as a CEO is a testament to the power of leadership driven by purpose and resilience. As he told the Observer, “The challenges you face will shape you, but it’s your vision and values that will define your success.”
