The inaugural Raneen Art Festival, hosted in the historic town of Muttrah, from 21 to 30 November 2024, presents a bold attempt to weave contemporary art into the fabric of Oman’s rich cultural and historical narrative. Featuring both local and international artists, the festival aspires to bridge the ancient and modern, inviting visitors to engage with works that reflect the essence of individual and collective memories steeped in the unique character of this coastal town.

Muttrah, with its stunning architecture and significant maritime history, serves as a captivating backdrop for Raneen. The choice of venues, including Mutrah Fort and the traditional houses of Bait Al Khonji and Bait Al Khori, offers an immersive context that challenges and enhances the viewer’s experience. Each site radiates historical importance, yet the festival adeptly transforms these spaces into dynamic platforms for contemporary art.

However, the integration of art within such a storied landscape poses inherent challenges. Planning a visit to this art festival? Here are a few tips to ensure you enjoy the experience.

Secure Your Parking Wisely

Parking in Muttrah can be a bit challenging, especially with the influx of visitors during Raneen. We recommend utilising the parking facilities around the Muttrah Fish Market building or the designated spots along the Mutrah Sea Road directly opposite the bustling Mutrah Souq. These locations provide convenient access to the galleries and exhibits while avoiding the tight spaces of the historic district. It might be a bit of a walk from the parking lot in Muttrah Fish Market, but at least you will avoid the hassle of the small, narrow roads leading to the galleries. Always watch for signs indicating parking regulations to avoid fines or towing. Respect designated no-parking zones to ensure the safety and flow of traffic. Given the popularity of Raneen and the limited parking space, arriving early in the day—or during weekday hours—can help you find a parking spot more easily.

Explore the Art Trail

The exhibitions for Raneen are spread over three distinct locations: Mutrah Fort, Bait Al Khonji, and Bait Al Khori. Be prepared for an enjoyable day of walking as you explore these sites. Comfortable shoes are essential, and don’t forget to stay hydrated while weaving through the art installations that illuminate Omani history and culture.

Be sure to capture the captivating works of notable artists such as Elina Brotherus, who brings a unique Scandinavian touch with her photography, and Khadija Al Maamari, whose art reflects deep-seated cultural narratives. Each artwork acts as a portal into the past, merging memory with contemporary vision—a true reflection of Oman’s evolving identity. Personally, this inaugural exhibit’s must-see includes the Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram. You can marvel at this captivating installation, measuring seven metres in diameter, which presents intricate NASA imagery of the moon’s surface.

Also, don't miss the Abundance and Scarcity by Azra Akšamija and MIT Future Heritage Lab, where you can experience a 70-metre outdoor shading canopy that merges artistic innovation with cultural sustainability. Be sure to include Shifting Hues of Time by Marwa Al Bahrani as this mesmerising octagonal installation plays with light and perspective and will definitely intrigue you.

Discover Diverse Artistic Perspectives

With nearly two dozen artists participating, be ready for quite an immersion. Among the talented artists featured, also check out Ammar Alkiyumi's installation, which focuses on the identity of places. His artworks draw inspiration from Mutrah’s architectural features, especially the iconic sea-breakers.

Also presenting at this art festival is Isra Mahmood Al Balushi, an award-winning Omani conceptual artist whose work has been showcased locally, across the GCC, and globally. With a background in Urban Planning and Architectural Design (2019), Isra explores the intersections of urbanism, culture, and human experience through multimedia art.

"Growing up in Muttrah, the city’s development mirrored my own journey. My artwork for Raneen charts 30 years of urban growth, overlaid with memories of my childhood in the old city. Through a web of light, I reflect the human exchanges that define Muttrah, creating a fluid narrative that unfolds as viewers move through the piece. It’s a homage to nostalgia, inviting those who left the city to reconnect with its essence and rediscover their own sense of belonging within the evolving landscape."

Embrace the Cultural Context

To truly appreciate the art at Raneen, engage with the historical and architectural beauty of Muttrah. As you stroll through archaic alleyways and alongside coastal views, take a moment to absorb the cultural significance of each building and installation. The harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary art reveals why Muttrah is the ideal setting for this celebration. Raneen is not just an event; it's an invitation to be part of a cultural dialogue and a celebration of creativity. Whether you’re an avid art lover or a curious traveller, this journey through the heart of Mutrah promises to ignite your imagination and deepen your appreciation for Omani culture. Therefore, don't rush through the experience; instead, take your time to understand the meaning behind the artwork.
