A day to reflect on the past...

It is now a distinctive time in the Sultanate of Oman as the county is in festive fever marking its 54th National Day. The celebration is not just limited to Oman alone but is cherished by everyone who loves the country.

The day is a reflection of the extraordinary journey of this blessed country to a rapidly developing modern nation empowering all its citizens and residents. In other words, this day is all about reflecting on the past, appreciating the present, and looking forward to a bright future for this esteemed and ancient land.

Fifty-four years of continuous development is more than a reason to celebrate this year. Having lived in this great country for nearly a quarter a century, I can say with pride that Oman is one of the very few stable, coherent, and prosperous countries not only in the Middle East but also around the world.

Although I am currently not in Oman and miss those coolest events, I still visualise how the proud flags in red, green, and white fly high and coloured led lights adorn the streets, reminding everyone of the achievements that were delivered in the last half a century.

No doubt, Oman has an incredible story of the breath-taking evolution! And this day is not just a celebration, but it is a heartfelt expression of love for the country and its rich heritage!

Looking back over the past years, what’ve been achieved in all sectors is just tremendous. Decades of continuous development are more than a reason to celebrate!

Under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the architect of its Renewed Renaissance, Oman continues its march towards a promising and bright future to achieve further progress and growth, as well as fulfilling the aspirations of everyone in this dear homeland.

Definitely, the Sultanate of Oman is a country where a lot of others are looking to replicate the same model... be its commitment to sustainability in industry, food security, environment, health, and education.

Through the ambitious Oman Vision 2040, the Sultanate of Oman has made significant strides in implementing structural reforms to boost the non-oil economy, drive diversification, and spur long-term sustainable growth.

In order to enhance the role of the different sectors of Omani society in building the future, this long-term development framework prioritizes education, health, and other social services to create a knowledge-driven, diversified, and competitive economy.

One of the significant aspects of Oman's vision is its emphasis on comprehensive human and urban development. From a time when school education was imparted under trees to today’s high-tech modern buildings in which children get education -- all are testimony to this phenomenal growth.

The legislation, developed with the support of the International Labour Organisation, radically reshaped the social protection system in Oman and is set to become a reference for countries not only in the region but also for other countries in the world.

Amongst ground-breaking feature is the new law for government-funded universal social protection benefits to citizens, including a cash benefit for all children under the age of 18, a universal old age pension for senior citizens over the age of 60, and a universal disability allowance.

Oman has been the focal point of peace in the Middle East, not only from within but also with its socio-political presence amongst neighbours. It stands poised with decades of experience to play a greater role in this world as a keeper and facilitator of peace.

In the political front, the Sultanate of Oman believes in dialogue and tolerance as an approach to addressing all issues and challenges to achieve peace. It also believes in relations based on mutual respect, positive cooperation, and harmony between countries.

No doubt, the anniversary of the glorious day of November 18 is dear and close to the heart of each and every one who loves this blessed land. Oman has always been beautiful, but I am happy that it is becoming more beautiful than ever!

I believe Oman has the potential to grow further on all levels, economically and socially, on the back of the astute and intelligent leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham, the country’s rich resources, and the indomitable spirit of its remarkable people.
