MUSCAT: Oman will look to build on the momentum from their previous victory over Palestine to boost their Fifa World Cup 2026 dreams as they take on Iraq in a tight encounter on Tuesday at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex. The match, starting at 8 pm, is expected to draw a full house as all available tickets have been snapped up by Omani fans.
The Red Warriors understand that today’s assignment against Iraq will be a crucial step towards climbing the standings, as a victory will bring them closer to the top two teams in the group. Oman are currently fourth in the standings, following their 1-0 win over Palestine, two points behind Iraq and Jordan, who played out a goalless draw last Thursday.
On the other hand, Iraq will aim to recover from their draw in the last match and secure a positive result. Head coach Jesús Casas and his technical staff are working diligently to ensure Iraq’s second-ever appearance at the Fifa World Cup Finals.
Prime match
Oman head coach Rasheed Jaber acknowledged the significance of the match. “This is a crucial game as we begin the second round of qualifiers. Playing at home gives us an advantage, and we are determined to capitalise on it. Iraq is a strong team with a great history, but we are prepared to fight hard to keep our hopes alive,” he said at the pre-match press conference.
Addressing Iraq’s line-up, which includes several professional players, Jaber emphasised, “We are facing the Iraq national team, not the individual clubs where their players compete. Respect for the opponent is key, but we will apply pressure with well-thought-out tactics. Mental preparation is just as important as physical readiness. I trust my players to deliver a disciplined and error-free performance.”
Omani captain Harib al Saadi highlighted the importance of the match for the team and fans. “This is one of the key matches in the qualifiers. We aim to maximise the home advantage and the incredible support of our fans to secure three points. The result of this game could be a significant step in our journey,” he said.
Strategic approach
On the other side, Iraq’s head coach Jesús Casas is equally focused on securing a win. “This is a critical match for us, and our aim is to achieve the dreams of the Iraqi people to qualify for the World Cup. Although we are missing Mustafa Sadoon due to suspension, we have regained Zayed Hussain, and the team is ready to perform,” said the Spanish coach.
Casas emphasised his strategic approach, noting that his line-up is carefully selected based on training and match performance. “Each game requires a tailored approach. We have adapted to various tactical setups before, and this match will be no different. Oman is a strong opponent, but we are ready to deliver our best.”
Iraqi player Rebin Solaka shared his commitment to the team's ambitions. “We are fully focused on achieving our World Cup dream. The support from our fans and media is invaluable, and we are determined to deliver strong performances in the coming matches,” he said.
As both teams vie for a critical three points, the stage is set for a thrilling encounter that could shape the course of the qualifiers. Fans can expect a high-stakes battle as Oman and Iraq fight to keep their World Cup aspirations alive.
