MUSCAT: OQ Gas Networks SAOG (OQGN) has confirmed the approval of a major new infrastructure project designed to expand its gas network capacity. On November 14, 2024, the company received official clearance from the relevant authorities to commence construction of a new 42-inch, 193 km loop line from Fahud to Suhar. This project, one of the largest ever approved by OQGN, is aimed at addressing the increasing energy demands of the Suhar and Ibri regions, in line with Oman’s national energy goals and the company’s long-term infrastructure strategy.

Expected to be completed by 2027, the new loop line will enhance OQGN’s northern gas network capacity by an additional 9 million metric standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd), boosting the reliability and efficiency of the network, said Mansoor al Abdali, CEO of OQGN

As part of its ongoing infrastructure expansion, OQGN plans to increase its pipeline network to 4,222 km by the end of 2024, with further extensions scheduled up to 2027. Network capacity is expected to grow substantially, from 69.3 billion SCM in 2023 to 79.7 billion SCM by 2027, with the volume of gas transported projected to rise from 40.5 billion SCM in 2023 to 45.6 billion SCM by 2027.

In line with Oman’s energy transition strategy, OQGN is also spearheading the development of hydrogen pipeline infrastructure. As the National Infrastructure Provider for hydrogen pipelines, the company is collaborating with various stakeholders to facilitate hydrogen transportation and support Oman’s ambitious Green Hydrogen production targets.
