Leadership of today: A call to action for the future

In the grand arena of leadership, a familiar refrain often echoes: “You are the leaders of tomorrow; prepare yourself for the mantle that shall fall upon your shoulders.”

This idea is noble, inspiring, and laced with the hope of a brighter, more enlightened future. However, it raises a critical question: What of the leaders of today?

While the world looks towards future generations to guide society, industry and governance, are the current leaders addressing the pressing issues of the present?

Leaders like Travis Kalanick, the former CEO of Uber, and Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, demonstrate the dangers of leadership that disregards ethics, accountability and the well-being of those it governs.

Kalanick’s toxic corporate culture and the scandal surrounding Uber, coupled with Holmes’ deceptive practices at Theranos, reveal the fragility of leadership that fails to prioritise integrity.

Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos, despite his success in building Amazon into a global titan, has also come under fire for fostering a culture of extreme pressure and burnout. These examples show that today’s leaders must first reflect on their own actions and the environments they create. Leadership is not just about making decisions for the future, but about handling the present with wisdom, compassion and responsibility.

If we are to truly prepare future leaders, we must examine the leadership of today. How can we expect the leaders of tomorrow to succeed when their predecessors have failed to address critical issues?

Leaders must confront the reality of their own failures and shortcomings. It is not enough to simply pass the baton to future generations. Today’s leaders must lead with integrity and vision, addressing the challenges of the present - whether it’s economic instability, environmental crises, or social inequities - before offering advice to the next generation.

The legacy of today’s leadership will directly shape the world that future leaders inherit. What lessons are being passed down?

If today’s leaders fail to act with transparency, fairness and resolve, they will leave behind a fractured world for the next generation to fix. The future cannot be a mere continuation of past mistakes.

True leadership requires courage to confront the issues of the moment and address them in a way that builds trust, fosters innovation and creates environments where individuals can thrive.

The responsibility of leaders today is clear: they must lead with purpose, embrace accountability and create a foundation that allows future generations to build upon.

Only by addressing the challenges of today can we hope to craft a tomorrow that is free from the burdens of past failures. Leadership is not merely about preparing others for tomorrow - it is about acting decisively today to create the future we all hope to see.
