Shura council holds annual press conference

Muscat: The Majlis Ash’shura held its annual press conference in the presence of Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman, Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed al Nadabi, Secretary-General of Majlis Ash’shura, on Tuesday.


The press conference was attended by the council members, heads of the standing committees, representatives of local media and stakeholders.


By holding the press conference, the Majlis Ash’shura aimed to enhance communication and make information available to the media to reflect the council’s performance within the scope of powers assigned to the council by the Basic Law of the State and the Law of the Council of Oman. It also aimed to provide a comprehensive presentation of the council’s works in terms of legislation and follow-up as well as the work of the standing committees during the first annual session. The meeting provided constructive dialogue and purposeful discussion with the local media representatives to enhance community awareness of the council’s roles and its handling of the national issues and files.



At the outset of the press conference, Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman of Majlis Ash’shura delivered a speech in which he stressed that the council embraces a clear approach derived from the Basic Law of the State and the Law of the Council of Oman. He pointed to the efforts undertaken by the council in the legislative field in line with Oman Vision 2040. He praised the great efforts made by media outlets and media professionals and the constructive interaction in conveying the council’s message and highlighting its efforts and roles.



Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed al Nadabi, Secretary-General of Majlis Ash’shura, spoke about the council’s work during the first annual session of the tenth term (2023-2027), during which the council managed to efficiently practice its competencies and powers in line with the developments witnessed by the Sultanate of Oman. He provided a detailed explanation of the follow-up tools available according to the Law of the Council of Oman and the government’s interaction with them. He stressed the role of the council in interacting with the national issues and files according to the powers assigned to the council.



The secretary-general of Majlis Ash’shura gave a presentation explaining that the council held 12 regular sessions during the first annual session during which the council discussed 4 ministerial statements, approved 20 draft laws and agreements referred by the government. The council activated follow-up tools which included 4 urgent statements, 151 requests for briefing and 40 parliamentary questions. The council’s standing committees held 121 meetings and discussed 89 topics in various sectors.


The press conference witnessed extensive discussions by local media representatives, focusing on the efforts made by the council in dealing with some national issues and files, including job seekers and dismissed workers, increasing the number of beneficiaries of the social system. Other topics discussed included taxes and their impact on society, issues related to school education and higher education, among others.
