Oman-based design studio Altqadum, winner of the Urban Commissions competition, is set to host a captivating performance by an Omani musical troupe at their innovative installation, TukTukDum, during Dubai Design Week.

The performance, tapping an Omani Musical troupe, is slated for November 6 and served as one of the highlights of the Dubai Design Week event, which took place from November 5 to 10 at Dubai Design District (d3).

The presentation is lauded as an exceptional opportunity to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Oman alongside contemporary design.

Dubai Design Week, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and in strategic partnership with Dubai Design District, is the region’s leading annual design festival. This year, it features over 150 activities, including engaging talks, hands-on workshops, creative performances, and special presentations, highlighting the diversity and innovation of designers and architects from more than 40 countries. With over 500 designers, brands, and architects participating, the festival is a dynamic platform for cultural exchange and collaboration.

The Urban Commissions competition, an integral part of Dubai Design Week, invites designers to propose community-driven projects that embody this year’s theme, ‘Tawila’—Arabic for ‘table.’ Altqadum's TukTukDum not only embodies this theme but also draws inspiration from the rich musical traditions of the Gulf, emphasizing the communal nature of music. This unique installation transforms the concept of a table into a performance space where interaction is encouraged, inviting audiences to become part of the artistic experience.

Led by renowned architects Marwan Albalushi, Najd Albalushi, and Abdulrahim Alkendi, Altqadum is celebrated for notable projects such as the Bab Al Salam Mosque in Muscat. Their innovative approach and commitment to community engagement in design reflect the spirit of Dubai Design Week, making it a prime venue for showcasing Oman’s vibrant culture and creative potential.

The jury for the Urban Commissions competition included esteemed design experts such as Dr Alamira Reem Al Hashimi and Ahmad Bukhash, highlighting the competitive nature and rigorous selection process that underscores the significance of this recognition. As Dubai Design Week celebrates its 10th anniversary, Altqadum’s TukTukDum stands as a testament to the dynamic interplay between culture, community, and design, not only enriching the festival but also offering a glimpse into the future of collaborative artistic expression in the region.
