Six German nationals, including four individuals with physical disabilities who use wheelchairs, along with two of their friends, are currently on a courtesy visit to the Sultanate of Oman, thanks to the emerging trend of Accessible Tourism.

Accessible travel, also known as Inclusive or Barrier-free Tourism, is a rapidly growing segment in the industry with significant economic potential, as well as being a meaningful social cause. This branch of tourism focuses on ensuring that tourist destinations, products, and services are accessible to all people, regardless of their physical or intellectual limitations, disabilities, or age.

"We have been working on creating products in Oman for this specific segment, and now we have the first group of people from Germany exploring various iconic landmarks and tourist locations in the Sultanate," said Ejaz Kazi of Eazy Travel, the company that organised the trip.

"We are delighted to announce that we have a German group, along with a small group of other visitors, exploring different tourist destinations in Oman," he added.

These physically challenged guests, accompanied by their friends, visited Salalah and then embarked on a detailed tour of Old Muscat, including a dhow cruise, providing them with a glimpse into the city's rich history, culture, and tradition. They also visited the Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts, where they learned about the forts' historical significance, particularly during the Portuguese occupation.

"This tour was carefully designed to provide a comfortable and engaging experience for wheelchair guests, combining historical landmarks, stunning architecture, and local culture," said Robby, Head of Tours at EVOLVE by E Travel.

Although the forts themselves were not accessible, the guides ensured that the guests could admire them from accessible vantage points, sharing fascinating stories about Oman's history. The guides also assisted the guests in navigating the souq and finding unique souvenirs to take home. The day ended with a sunset dhow cruise, where the guests were able to enjoy a tranquil experience aboard a traditional Omani dhow.

"It was a marvelous experience cruising along the sea in Oman. We were pleasantly surprised by the beautifully crafted wooden boats, which have been used by Omani sailors for centuries," said the visitors.

Accessible tourism is becoming increasingly popular in Oman, with authorities working to improve amenities for people with limited mobility. Malls, retail outlets, tourist destinations, and new buildings under construction are being encouraged to provide facilities for individuals with disabilities, including ramps for wheelchair access.

The guests were grateful for the unique opportunity to experience Oman's rich maritime heritage while enjoying the natural beauty of Muscat's coastline. The cruise began at Marina Bandar Al Rowdha, where they were warmly welcomed aboard the dhow. As the dhow glided away from the harbor, they were surrounded by stunning views of Muscat's landmarks.

"Thanks to the tour agencies, both in Germany and in Oman, for making this trip possible. This is my first visit to the country, and I hope to return every year," said one of the visitors.
