WHEN German couple Wilfried and Gisela Hofmann set out in 2007 to explore the world on their bikes, they sought authentic experiences and genuine connections rather than just new landscapes.
Over four years, they covered more than 50,000 kilometres across continents, but Oman left an indelible mark on their hearts. The couple returned 15 times, captivated by Oman’s rich culture, diverse scenery and warm hospitality.
From their very first visit, Oman enchanted the Hofmanns.
They biked through deserts, hiked mountains and picnicked by the sea, experiencing hospitality as a way of life. Omani locals frequently invited them to share meals, attend celebrations and join their daily lives. This openness, they remarked, is unparalleled anywhere else.
During their initial travels, the Hofmanns biked through challenging terrains, journeying from the UAE-Oman border to Muscat and from vast deserts to Salalah and the Yemeni border.
Wilfried recalls how Omanis welcomed them, often inviting them to weddings and picnics, a reflection of Oman’s deep-rooted traditions of warmth and generosity. “These moments weren’t just pitstops but immersive experiences,” he noted.
A cultural aspect that particularly resonated with the couple was the tradition of picnicking. Though they carried a gas stove for cooking, they were frequently joined by locals and Indian expatriates eager to share meals and stories. “Cooking and conversing together became a bridge to lasting friendships,” they reflected. This simple act of breaking bread became a hallmark of their travels and solidified their connections with the people they met.
For the Hofmanns, biking was not merely a mode of travel but a way to bond with nature and the local community.
Cycling through the Rub Al Khali was a highlight. Despite the intense heat and limited water sources, they received support from Bedouins, who shared their knowledge and provided essential supplies. This mutual respect and camaraderie formed the foundation of their journey.
Their adventures extended beyond biking. Wilfried documented their hikes from Germany to Oman, including explorations of Musandam, where Omani hospitality shone brightly. Police officers would often bring them lunch while they trekked, a gesture Wilfried found unmatched. “No other place has police officers like this,” he mused.
The couple’s admiration for Oman included its natural beauty. They often camped amid stunning landscapes, enjoying starry nights and early sunrises. In the Rub Al Khali, they pitched their tent near the oasis of Al Hashman, marvelling at the diverse flora and fauna.
Oman’s historical fortresses also intrigued them. The 17th-century fortress in Nizwa and its surrounding oasis gardens captivated their imaginations, while the lively atmosphere of Nizwa’s Friday market showcased Oman’s blend of tradition and modernity.
The Hofmanns encourage adventure seekers to explore Oman respectfully, as guests. For them, Oman is more than a travel destination; it’s a place where hearts connect and cultures merge.
Their experiences are chronicled in two German-language books authored by Wilfried. The first, Grenzenlos (Without Borders), reflects their journey across continents, with a significant focus on Oman. The second, Abgelatscht (A Long Journey on Foot), recounts their walk from Germany to Oman and back. Through these works, they share their deep connection with Oman, highlighting the warmth and beauty they encountered.
After years of exploration, Wilfried and Gisela remain enchanted by Oman’s beauty and the generosity of its people, eagerly anticipating their next visit and the new chapters it will bring to their enduring love story with this exceptional land.
