On October 29, the Oman Cancer Association (OCA) hosted its 20th Annual Walkathon, bringing together hundreds of participants from diverse industries—including schools, communities, and various institutions.

This year’s event showcased a significant presence from the hotel and tourism sectors, highlighting their commitment to community health by volunteering prizes for the event's draws.

The theme for this year’s walk, “No One Fights Alone,” underscored the collective mission to raise awareness and support for those affected by cancer. This annual event served as the culmination of a month-long campaign dedicated to breast cancer awareness—a campaign that has been central to OCA's efforts since its inception.

The Walkathon, set at the Oman Automobile Association, spanned from 3 PM to 8:30 PM, with the walking event commencing at 4:30 PM. Attendees enjoyed a variety of family-friendly activities beyond the walk itself, creating a vibrant atmosphere for participants of all ages. This included mammography clinics for women, food outlets serving local delicacies, and fun inflatable games for children, ensuring a holistic experience.

To add to the excitement, there were also animal interaction areas, a music van, games, and lively mascots, making it a day filled with entertainment and community spirit. This variety not only engaged participants but also provided a platform for education and awareness, particularly about early detection methods and healthy lifestyle choices.

Dr. Manal bint Abdul Majeed al Zadjali, Secretary General of OCA, emphasized the importance of community involvement, encouraging one and all to unite under the event’s theme, “No One Fights Alone.”

This year, the visibility of the tourism industry manifested not only through volunteer support but by showcasing the collaborative spirit essential for tackling a shared challenge like cancer. With heartfelt contributions from sponsors, partners, and volunteers who have supported the Pink Ribbon Initiative since its inception, the Walkathon stands as a testament to the community's resilience and collective mission to fight cancer.

October is recognized globally as Pink Ribbon Month, and the Walkathon reflects the commitment to education and advocacy surrounding breast cancer, which remains the leading cause of death for women in Oman.

Cancer is a pressing global health issue, affecting millions and altering the fabric of families and communities. According to the World Health Organization, an increasing number of people are being diagnosed with various forms of cancer each year. In Oman, concerted efforts have been made to combat this illness through awareness and education.

Recent developments in Oman include advancements in cancer treatment facilities and an increase in community-led initiatives aimed at prevention and early detection.

The OCA's Walkathon is vital not only for fundraising but also for strengthening community ties and fostering a support network for cancer patients and their families. As Dr. Waheed bin Ali al Kharousi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of OCA, noted, such events encourage early detection and effective treatment, reducing the stigma associated with cancer and promoting a more supportive environment for those affected.
