MUSCAT: Dhofar Municipality is making the most of the Sarb season to drive tourism and economic activities, spotlighting the governorate’s unique appeal during this enchanting period. The 'Sarb' season, which began from September 21 and extends for three months, follows Dhofar’s famed khareef season.

Locally known as the spring season, Sarb offers clear skies, bright sunshine, and a mild climate, providing the perfect setting for domestic tourists to explore Dhofar’s vibrant landscapes.

Characterised by low humidity, clear skies, and blooming flowers, Sarb season transforms the governorate’s terrain, unveiling vast green plains and gentle sea waves that attract families and nature lovers alike. The governorate becomes a magnet for tourists seeking to escape the heat and enjoy Dhofar’s picturesque beauty and tranquil environment.

Dr Ahmed bin Mohsen al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, emphasised the importance of international events during Sarb. He noted that plans are already in motion to host global professional competitions next year, building on the success of past editions. This strategic focus aims to strengthen tourism and stimulate economic growth, encouraging more international visitors to experience the unique charm of Dhofar during the Sarb season.

Beyond its tourism appeal, Sarb is a critical economic season for Dhofar’s local communities. Farmers, fishermen, and livestock breeders benefit from the period’s favourable conditions, which enhance agricultural productivity and marine yields. Mountainous and plain areas reliant on seasonal autumn rains experience a surge in crop harvests, particularly corn, local beans, and cucumbers. Honey production also sees a boost during Sarb, along with an increase in high-nutrient fish varieties such as Sharkha, Kanaad, sardines and Shaari.

One of the hallmark traditions of the Sarb season is 'Khateel Al Ibil,' the springtime grazing ritual. During this period, camel owners transport their camels from plains or sheltered areas behind the mountains, known locally as 'Al Qatn,' to reopened grazing lands. The ritual is a vibrant display of traditional culture, accompanied by poetic chants and age-old customs that reflect the deep cultural roots of Dhofar’s people.

Among the must-visit areas during the Sarb season is Jabjat, an area celebrated for its scenic plains and mesmerising natural beauty. As Sarb progresses, the lush greenery of the plains gradually shifts to a golden hue, creating a stunning visual spectacle. Visitors find solace in the tranquillity of Jabjat, which embodies the season’s magic and serenity, leaving them with an indescribable sense of peace.

Dhofar Municipality’s efforts to enhance the Sarb season showcase its commitment to promoting the governorate as a year-round destination, leveraging its natural beauty and cultural richness to attract both domestic and international visitors. Through a blend of tourism activities, traditional events, and economic opportunities, Dhofar is poised to make the most of its spring season and further strengthen its tourism and economic prospects.
