The Oman Cancer Association's Dhofar Branch organised an Annual Cancer Awareness Walkathon at Dahariz Beach on Friday, aiming to foster community solidarity in the fight against cancer.
The event saw widespread participation from the local Omani community, expatriates, associations, and community groups, drawing men and women from across Dhofar.
The walkathon focused on raising awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, and the range of treatments available within Oman, particularly highlighting breast cancer and colon cancer as the most common forms affecting women and men, respectively.
Speaking on the impact of this initiative, Salem bin Awad al Najjar, President of the Oman Cancer Association, Dhofar Branch, emphasised the critical need for ongoing education to empower communities with knowledge about cancer risks and the importance of early intervention.
Dr Muna Bait Ajzoon, Associate Dean at the Oman College of Health Sciences Dhofar Branch and Vice-President of the Oman Cancer Association Dhofar Branch, highlighted the success of the campaign in driving greater community engagement.
"Screening has increased, and there is more and more participation of the communities in the awareness campaign," Dr Muna observed.
She also noted that "funding has improved due to the participation of private partners, hospitals, and local organisations," which has enabled broader outreach and resources for cancer care and support.
Rakesh Jha, President of Indian Social Club Salalah called the event important due to its message to the masses that calls for awareness for cancer and ways to prevent it.
"The Annual Cancer Awareness Walkathon is a testament to Dhofar’s diverse community spirit, where we come together as one to support a cause that impacts all of us. Events like this not only raise awareness but also build a bridge of solidarity and hope," he said.
Notable participants included the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment, educational institutions, community clubs, OQ, and Lifeline Hospital, all of whom lent their support to this impactful cause, underscoring the community's commitment to health and wellness.
