MUSCAT: Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly emerged as one of the most transformative technologies of the 21st century, offering unparalleled opportunities to reshape economies, enhance competitiveness, and drive innovation. In Oman, the integration of AI and future management tools is not merely a trend but a strategic move aimed at positioning the country as a global leader in these fields. Dr Rami Shaheen, a consultant in artificial intelligence and Secretary General of the Global Association for Artificial Intelligence (GAIA), sheds light on Oman’s current efforts and future prospects in this area.

At the forefront of AI initiatives in Oman, Dr Shaheen and his team are working towards placing Oman on the global competitive map.

“In this phase, we are focusing on making Oman a key player in artificial intelligence and future management tools. This is a collaborative effort that has already seen significant contributions from various government bodies and institutions,” he explains.

Dr Shaheen highlights the success of the recent Generative AI Conference held in Oman, where over 200 participants attended a workshop that introduced global best practices in AI. The workshop, which attracted widespread attention, showcased Oman’s growing interest in this technology. “During the workshop, we were able to develop a rapid AI solution for one of the telecom companies, such as Ooredoo, applying these global best practices. This demonstrates our ability to innovate and implement AI-driven solutions quickly and effectively,” Dr Shaheen notes.

One of the key outcomes of these efforts is the introduction of an international AI licence. T

his initiative aims to empower Omani citizens by equipping them with the necessary skills to contribute to Oman’s Vision 2040. As Dr Shaheen explains, “The AI licence will enable Omanis to become proactive citizens, capable of playing an active role in the country’s future development. AI is not just a technological tool; it is a means to elevate human potential and foster a culture of innovation.”

However, the rise of AI has not been without its concerns. Many fear that AI could replace human jobs, a common misconception in the discourse surrounding technological advancement.

Dr Shaheen dismisses this notion, stating, “AI will not replace employees, but it will redefine their roles. The focus must be on enhancing both institutional and individual capabilities to align with the demands of the AI era. In doing so, we can create new job opportunities and reduce unemployment, while integrating AI into Oman’s national security strategy.”

He stresses the importance of preparing Oman’s workforce for the AI-driven future. “We need to equip Omanis with the skills required to thrive in an AI-dominated world. This includes not only traditional AI skills but also broader areas such as bioinformatics, nanotechnology, neurotechnology, quantum computing, and cyber immunity. These fields represent the next frontier of knowledge production and innovation,” Dr Shaheen explains.

Dr Shaheen’s vision for Oman is clear: a future where artificial intelligence is a catalyst for progress, creating new opportunities for the country and its citizens. “

The potential of AI to drive Oman’s economic and social development is immense. By embracing this technology, Oman can secure its place on the global stage and become a hub for innovation in the Middle East.”

As Oman continues its journey towards Vision 2040, AI and other advanced technologies will play a critical role in shaping the nation’s future. With the right investments in education, innovation, and institutional capacity, Oman can harness the power of AI to drive growth, reduce unemployment, and build a sustainable, competitive economy.

In conclusion, artificial intelligence offers Oman a unique opportunity to enhance its global competitiveness and achieve its long-term goals. Through strategic initiatives, such as the international AI licence and the focus on future-oriented skills, Oman is well on its way to becoming a leader in the AI field. By continuing to invest in these areas, Oman will not only secure its place on the global stage but also create a brighter, more prosperous future for its citizens.
