MUSCAT: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism signed two financing agreements worth RO 12 million on Thursday, to fund the initial stages of the upcoming Maritime History Museum project in Sur.
The agreements were signed with Oman LNG and Oman India Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO). The agreement was signed by Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism; Hamad bin Mohammed al Numani, CEO of Oman LNG; and Dr Ahmed bin Saeed al Marhubi, CEO of Oman India Fertiliser Company.
Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, highlighted the significance of the agreements, saying, “The signing of these financing agreements is part of enhancing partnerships among various sectors supporting development projects. It marks a significant milestone in implementing this project, which has commenced with the appointment of a consultancy office to manage the engineering aspect. I appreciate the support that includes RO 10 million from Oman LNG and RO 2 million from OMIFCO, which strengthens the desired strategic partnership between the public and private sectors.”
The CEO of Oman LNG Development Foundation, Dr Amer bin Nasser al Mutaani, shared, “The agreement between the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and Oman LNG aims to enhance partnerships and elevate the cultural and tourism potential of Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, particularly Sur. This forthcoming museum will create new job opportunities and enhance local value addition, reflecting the importance of investing in human resources. Moreover, this project is part of the 'Gift of Oman' initiatives, showcasing Oman LNG's commitment to supporting the Omani community and enhancing cultural heritage.”
Furthermore, Dr Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, Governor of Al Sharqiyah South emphasised that financing the Maritime Museum in Sur will significantly benefit the heritage and tourism sector, serving as a tourist attraction that supports the economy in various fields and enhances the urban landscape of Sur. The Maritime History Museum project is expected to serve as a cultural and tourism landmark, showcasing the history of Omani navigation and maritime trade. Additionally, the establishment of the museum is an important step in promoting Oman as a leading cultural and tourist destination and will support scientific research and studies related to Omani maritime history.
Recently, a consultancy tender for the design and supervision of the project was awarded to Ibrahim Jaidah Architects and Engineers, a firm specialising in architectural design, contract management, and cultural architectural consulting. The museum's exhibition design will be executed by Haley Sharpe Design, a British company known for its expertise in museum and cultural exhibition development.
