Muscat: The Second race of 22nd edition of the annual camel races for the 2024-2025 season was concluded on Sunday, which was continued for three days with 89 rounds to be held in Barka and Adam fields.
The event was supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY) and organised by the Oman Camel Racing Federation (OCRF) in cooperation with Royal Camel Corps (RCC).
The second race is the third event out of 23 events that OCRF’s Board of Directors recently announced for the season. Of 13 general races, three races each are sponsored by Shell Oman and Occidental Oman. Other events feature camel beauty contests, milking competitions and Ardah (traditional races).
The race included 46 rounds that were held at RCC field in al Felaj in Barka, and 43 rounds that took place at Al Bashayer race track in the Wilayat of Adam.
As many as 3000 camels vied for the race prize, cash prize for the top 10 and chance to sell the winning camels to the GCC countries.
The first day on Friday witnessed 36 rounds divided equally between Barka and Adam, that were dedicated to ‘Hagayeg’ category (for two-year-old camels over a distance of 3 km).
On the second day of competition's 27 rounds, 12 rounds were held in Adam and 12 rounds in Barka for the ‘Laqaya’ category (three-year-old over a distance of 4 km). The Barka field hosted three rounds for human riders race for 2 km.
The third day was witnessed 26 rounds divided equally between Barka and Adam; 12 rounds for ‘Al Ythaa’ category (four-year-old for 5 km), six rounds for ‘Al Thanaya' category (five-year-old over a distance of 6 km) and eight rounds for ‘Al Hawl’ category (above six years for 6 km).
The third race, forth event, will be held on November 8, with 89 rounds at RCC field in Barka and Al Bashayer race track.
OCRF said only purebred camels owned by Omanis can take part in the forthcoming competitions. The participants have to register online so that the federation can transfer money to the owner's bank account in case of winning the prize. In all rounds, the top 10 winners will receive cash awards.
