Last week, my article revolved around the definition of an “intelligent world," that is, getting everything in the world connected and interconnected, from home devices, systems, streets, buildings, infrastructure, and offices to society as a whole. We defined what an “intelligent world” literally means and looked at a high-level representation of the concept. I promised at the end of my article last week to shed some light on the progress of the concept, especially after returning back from attending a 5-day jam-packed conference, workshop, and tech-led events at the world’s largest technology conference (GITEX) in Dubai.
Briefly, GITEX, which ran from the 14th-18th October (last week), showcased cutting-edge and latest technologies from the heavyweight innovative solution providers around the world. The focus was primarily on artificial intelligence (AI) innovations, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and quantum computing, to name a few. Truth be told, it would almost be impossible for one to visit every stall (exhibitor), attend every session at the conference, and meet and network with professionals without planning the same in advance, for there were a wide array of innovations presented, technology players exhibiting, and delegates around the world attending. Approximately from the organisers stats, there were over 6,500 exhibitors, 1,800 startups, and 1,200 investors alongside governments from more than 180 countries — proof is in the pudding on the gigantic crowd that was on the floor — a massive flow of information to consume.
I was honoured to, however, get a close look as well as experience at one of the major players (Huawei), who is working very hard behind the scenes to bring the “intelligent world” concept closer to reality. As one of the largest ICT technology solution providers in the world, Huawei showcased a wide range of advanced digital and intelligent transformation solutions under the theme "Accelerate Industrial Digitalization and Intelligence," where it highlighted innovations in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, cloud computing, and cybersecurity for many sectors that include but are not limited to manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, education, finance, and energy as well. Their goal is to simply introduce innovation and support productivity while ensuring operational efficiency is enhanced along the way.
During GITEX, Huawei hosted the "Industrial Digital and Intelligent Transformation" Summit, where it discussed the future of digitalization and its role in driving economic growth. Key developments, including collaboration with industry partners and governments, were shared during the summit as part of Huawei's long-term vision for creating a fully connected, intelligent world. Clearly, the initiatives at the summit highlight Huawei's ongoing effort to drive digital transformation globally while contributing to societal well-being and economic development.
It was fascinating to observe the Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) at the conference, showcasing their collaborative efforts with Huawei through their strategic association, which primarily focuses on 5G and cloud solutions. As observed during the session, the objective of the collaboration between Huawei and Omantel is to develop cutting-edge solutions that address local industry needs while fostering economic growth at large. Enabling faster connectivity along with enhanced cloud services is the chief goal Omantel aims to achieve via Huawei's proven technology, expertise, and experience in the field, ultimately creating a solid foundation for living in an "intelligent world.".
To conclude, are we getting closer to living in an “intelligent world”? Yes. Are there players actively working behind the scenes to create an infrastructure that supports living intelligently? Yes, internationally via technology solution providers and locally via telecom operators, as I have witnessed personally during the 5-day journey at the event and my summary with the article today. How soon is something that I cannot affirm due to the complexities involved from every stakeholder involved (and not just technology providers per se).
